1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 20, 2011

I have a 1999 Jeep GC. To save time, I will tell you the problem and then everything I have done. Monday, My wife takes the Jeep to work. Comes home. No Issues. Monday night approx 10 minutes after she gets home, we get in the Jeep to run to town. Turned over one time slowly but did not start. On the next attempt, it didn't even turn over. Just clicking relays. I removed battery. Had tested. Good. I replaced the battery terminals. I removed starter. Had tested. Good. I replaced the starter relay, I replaced the neutral safety switch. Still no start or crank. I flashed the ignition three times and it threw a p1388 code. (Auto Shutdown) I pressed the C/T and Reset buttons on the overhead display. Self test passed. Tested while trying to start. Failure J1850 Communication. I have no ideas at this time. I have a giant paperweight in my driveway. Any help?

I just went through the same thing with my 1998jgc.you may want to start with the crank positioning sensor.i had to change the crank sensor and cam sensor distributer cap and rotor button

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2011

I can rule out the cap and rotor since mine doesn't even turn over. Not sure if the CKS would stop it from cranking but I will try it.

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2011

you can also try jumping the starter with a screwdriver .if that turns it over it may be a neutral safety switch or ignition switch

My gc 99 dont start by the first time is does after 3or4 cranking tray and went hot by driving some times wont acselerate and make explotion no cheking engine light is on

Since your check engine light is on, it is telling you that the computer generated an error code. You can take it to any auto parts store and they will read the code for you - usually for free. That will give you some place to start looking for the problem.

1999 jeep grand cherokee 4 L engine, shuts off while driving and comes back on with no code or check engine light coming on. Also shuts off when idling, but always starts right back up.

I would start with the ignition switch. Since it is intermittant it will be hard to tell if it is the problem. Un less you take the switch apart. Which I tear everything apart to make sure. And depending on the complexidy I repair them. Again this is just a shot in the dark.

Lost my car keys in Las Vegas, Nevada my extra set is at home in another state, how can i get another jeep key made so I can go home? Car is a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Take your car's VIN and other information to the local Jeep dealer.

They can make you a new set of keys.

They will require proof of ownership.

Depending on the dealer they may require you to have the vehicle towed to the dealership.

Even if the dealer is open Saturday, it may take until monday, since the key making folks usually on work normal hours.

Good Luck!

94' Jeep Gc shuts off while driving. wont restart for hours!!

Sounds like either the fuel pump is going bad and overheating, or, the crankshaft position sensor is going bad...both items will give similar symptoms. Both are not terribly difficult jobs but are time consumers. Before doing either repair, you need a code scan and better diagnosis than I can give you here without a hands-on examination. Fuel pump can be diagnosed by spraying carb cleaner into the throttle body while cranking in "no start" condition. If engine fires up then stalls it's a pump problem. If not then it's a spark control problem.

CRUISE CONTROL

My wifes 99 Jeep GC had the same problem. I replaced the brake light switch and it fixed the problem. The switch is under the dash behind the brake pedal. It is about 10 bucks and requires no tools to replace. Good luck!

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

I had a problem with my Jeep doing the same thing. It turned out to be the Crank shaft senor. It would just turn off even on the highway at 60mph.
If you can change it yourself you will save a lot of money.

With the help of this awesome guy randy from washington, i did some relay jumping, more wire tracing and found it was the crank sensor was shorting out with just the key on. with key on, locate the crank sensor behind the valve cover, unplug it and see if everything comes back on, this is what it did for me.
