Sounds like your clutch is not disengaging. when you press on the clutch pedal you should feel the resistance of the clutch pressure plate. There is a pilot bearing in the flywheel when it goes bad it continues to turn the transmission mainshaft not allowing your gears to line up for a shift, but you have noticed a bad noise if this were the cause. Or your clutch hydraulics have gone out. check your fluid level. if low you may have sucked some air into your system. you will have to bleed the lines as you would for car brakes. The other possibilities are bad clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder,

1995 Jeep Wrangler Auto Trans 1st to 2nd shift acts like it goes into neutral what could the problem be

When was the last time the transmission fluid and filter changed? I would have that serviced first. If it is an electronic transmission, the line pressure might also have to be reset.

87 jeep wrangler 4 wheel drive don't engage dosen't seem like i have any vacum to the front end

remove the vacuum hose from the shift motor on the front axle.with the vehicle running,(be sure to set parking break and /or chock tires.) place your finger over the end of the hose check for vacuum,it will be very slight. if there is no suction it is probably the vacuum switch on the transfer case. if there is vacuum, first check the vacuum motor for holes.(they rust through sometimes.) if no holes are noticed, remove the shift motor and check the shift fork. if the 4wd indicator light comes on it is probably the shift fork.

My 89 Jeep YJ manual will not go in to reverse while running

Problem is likely either a worn shift fork or bad synchro (both inside the transmission) It's unlikely that you have a clutch problem otherwise the problem would be with first and reverse and shifting other gears would also be difficult.

Stuck in 4 Wheel Drive Gear 1989 Jeep Wrangler was stuck in sand. Shifted to 4 wheel drive and now cannot switch back to AWD. Any suggestions?

Assume that is stuck in 4wd, cannot shift back to 2wd. Have you tried shifting to 4wd/Lo and back? Try letting out on the clutch while slowly rolling?

Assume you are manual transmission?

Jeep Wrangler 1998 straight drive has difficult times going into reverse gear. I don't drive it every day, usually towing it behind my RV. It seems better when I drive it more, but is still difficult to...

if this is a 5 speed manual transmission...all you need to do before putting your jeep into reverese is puting it into first gear and then shifting it to reverse to avoid any grinding or problems shifting into reverse...this isn't a problem just a poor jeep design by not installing an extra gear to eliminate this grinding or shifting problem

1991 jeep wrangler sahara shifting promblems

Your clutch is not disengaging. If it a hydrolic clutch chk. the fluid in resavor, Or slave cyl. for the clutch is bad, Or it has got air in it and needs to be bleed. This is a clutch problem, nothing wrong with trans. If its a manual clutch linkage its an ajustment thing. My best guess if its hydrolic slave cyl. went bad, or resavor is out of fluid.
