If you have a scan tool capable of looking at input and output speed sensor data for the transmission that is the first thing I would look at. If you don't than it wouldn't hurt to try a new input speed sensor. They are available from your local NAPA. The speed sensors are located on the drivers side of the transmission. They are a light yellowish white color. it will have a black connector with two wires. The one towards the front is the input speed sensor the one to the rear is the output speed sensor. you will need a 1"socket to remove it.

If replacing the sensor doesn't fix it you will need to bring it in and have it looked at.

The speed sensors are pretty common failures on Chrysler transmissions.

1999 Jeep Cherokee. The transmission will not shift past second gear. It is stuck in Limp Mode?

Yes, that is the whole idea of Limp Mode. It limits you to first and second gear so you can limp slowly to the nearest garage without causing catastrophic damage to the engine. What you need to do is connect a good quality DTC code reader scan tool and see the real reason that Limp Mode has been engaged.

I have a 1999 grand cherokee. The check engine light came on with a P1768 code. If I keep the trans in the "drive" position and start off, it feels like the transmission is in 3rd gear. No...

Hi, Your like your jeep is in limp in mode, this is to keep you from burning up transmission and to get you some were off the road, the p1768 code means A/T Transmission Relay Output Always Off. This should be checked out by your local shop or dealer. but you should make sure that the fluid level is correct, if to low there is not enough fluid pressure for the solenoid's to engage the relays. Hope this can help you out. If i can help you anymore fell free to re post.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited P0700 diagnostic problem

P0700 means there is a transmission fault code in the transmission controller. Since the transmission controller doesn't have a light attached, it tells the engine controller to turn the light on using this code. You'll have to access the transmission controller to further diagnose the problem.
