When you move the shifter into the position P,R,N,D does the indicator on the gauge light up. For example in "P" the P indictor light up, "R" the R indicator light up and so on.
If it does then you might have a bad transmission.
If the indicator stay in one position only even when you' move your shifter back and forth. You might have a broken link cable from the shifter to the trans.

Testimonial: "thanks a lot. The indicator light does light up and shift whenever i move it. i felt a slight tug a few days prior and thought nothing of it."

Losing reverse is a sign that the transmission is due for major service and may have been result of neglect in the proper oil or level of oil. Bad luck but all life ends, eventually

The car has an automatic transmission and all of a sudden i had no reverse had no slipping or nothing the drive gears work fine no slipping grinding nothing shifts through all gears just fine

It may just need servicing/adjusting.

Your reverse gear is actually first gear ... when you select reverse another 'cog' fits into the toothed wheels to change the direction of first gear ... to give you reverse...

It may be a sticky valve or just a bit of adjustment (workshop job..) that is required.

What you can try ..

Start the car ... move the lever through all the positions several times (foot on brake..). Keep your foot on the brake and then put it in reverse and rev the car. Hard!

Try doing it several times.

An auto transmission works on valves opening and closing. Reverse gear - in comparison with the forward gears - is seldom used. The reverse valve can 'stick'. Try forcing it to open ... frighten it ... but keep your foot on the brake...

How do I fix the transmission problem? The car is moving forward at neutral, drive and low gear, and switching to parking mode at reverse and parking. The car is not backing up at all.

Transmission may now be toast since you continued to drive it when maybe low on fluid or torque converter had failed. How long since last fluid and filter change? Ever?

Transmission

Your problem is a bad CV axle and outer carrier bearing failure. The grinding is coming from brake rotor on that side due to the bearing failure. the brake rotor and bearing is causing the lock down. Do not attempt to drive or further damage will occur. Transmission is probably OK. Replace both sides (CV axels and Carrier bearings, 150,000 is time) Check brake components for damage and replace pads while you are there.

Changed transmission fluid and filter on 2001 mustang now it will not move while it is in Drive

Well..., then just sit in the driver's seat and make noises like as if you're really driving it (ha,ha)sorry, just needed to put a smile on your face. Anyways,when/IF transmission converter is emptied,it needs to refill fully as it makes mechanisms(valves,so on)work to make the car move;now that is IF it was drained from also there. If you drained the fluid from the transmission pan(drain plug),changed the filter PROPERLY INSTALLED,refilled 2 thirds while engine off then running safely in PARK (parking brake on)fill to recommended amount checking with dipstick ,while in the car with brake pedal on,put in drive-neutral-reverse to make transmission's mechanisms make operation until car starts making a movement, then it should be okay. Are you sure you didn't nock something out of place, like linkage for gear changes??. Does the car make any noises when shifting gears??make a clunk noise??does it try to move??;need to know more details for someone to understand and find problem.

2004 nissan altima 2.5s will start but won't move in any gears

You have a failed automatic transmission. You will need to remove and replace it or have it rebuilt.

Goes in reverse but dont move. in drive only goes 10mrh.

I think you need to bring that thing to a transmission shop. it is a bit surprising that a 5 y'old car would have a bad trans but maybe a transmission shop can save it. GL

Car starts fine and goes in reverse fine

First thing is check your transmission fluid level. 2nd thing is, if you haven't changed filter & fluid in transmission in a while, spend the money & do it, or have it done.
