If it whines when in the 4x4 position but not at any other time then the noise you hear may be coming from the transfer case and is caused by the high gear load of driving both axles on a this type of surface. If you are driving in the 4x4 position on any dry hard surface you will hear some noise from the transfer case and usually it is a noticeable whine. Also, driving in 4x4 on a dry/hard surfaces greatly adds to the strain and wear on the power train. It would also be a good idea to have the both axles and transfer case fluid levels checked to be sure none of them are low. Hope this helps a bit and good luck!

I am getting a whine from front of my cobalt 2007 also. it starts at 30 mph and stops at 29 mph. thought it could be bearing. but it seems to sound as though its in he middle front, cant be sure.

When you hear the whine when driving, move the steering slightly side to side.If you can change the whine,it is a wheel bearing.Once the car is lifted, spinning each front wheel by hand with the other hand on the strut, you should feel roughness through the suspension from one or both of the front wheels.Roughness or looseness means a bad bearing.

Very loud whining nose on front end ..

if it is a wheel bearing it should make more noise turning one way or the other,if it doesn't make a difference which way you turn it's not the wheel bearing

I replaced the wheels hubs on my 2009 Pontiac g5 and it's still making a whining sound from the front end as I gain speed.

Whining sounds come from diffs that have a problem in the mesh between the crown wheel and pinion If yours is not front wheel drive then the noise may be from over tightened wheel bearings or failed bearings or the abs sender touching the exciter

1999 ford explorer limited whining noise in front end

Whining noise is probably in one of the pulleys or belts. Probably the power steering. And the popping is probably CV axles.

A whining sound up near passenger side front of car, bad snow storm, car got stuck...started this whining just a couple of days later. worried it could be transmission...any ideas?

a whining under the hood is usually a belt, or pump. most of the time it is the power steering pump. make sure that the power steering reservoir is full and the belts are not damaged or dry rotting.

Lound roaring noise in the front end does it in 4 wheel drive and in two wheel drive

Sound like a front wheel bearing. If it was in the differential it would only make noise in 4 wheel drive

2001 chev 1500 rear end is making a whinning noise like a bearing noise. Any suggestions as to how to confirm or what is the procedure to remove gears and check bearings.

Check to see if your outter wheel bearings are loose, to do this jack up the rear of the truck about 2 inches away from the ground and push and pull on the wheel. does it have any play? if so you may need a bearing and race or cup for that wheel also try wiggling the tire back and forth to see if there is any movement. If there is none check oil level is it full? yes? then strut truck up put it in gear and see if you here the whine. at what speed is the whine? Or if it went away while running off the ground then you have a tire problem if you need more help post here for the rest of the story.
