How do I remove wiper motor on 1993 previa? motor operates, but sounds like something is "stripped" and wipers do not move. there is a lot of linkage under the cowl - I didn't know if just the motor can be removed, or if more stuff has to come out. Also, how do the wiper arms come off? I want to clean & re-paint them, but didn't want to just start prying on them without knowing.

    Thanks for the info.

when I asked about removing the wiper arms, I meant the entire arm - Is it just press-fit onto the splined shaft that sticks through the cowl? I don't see any kind of retainers or set screw there.

  • cnsbedell Jan 31, 2011

I finally installed the motor. It is obvious that neither of you has ever worked on one of these. First of all, there is a mounting bracket about 18" long that has to be removed, and the bolts holding the motor are removed from the TOP side of the bracket. This requires removal of the cabin air duct and coolant recovery tank, and 5 bolts holding the main bracket up under the cowl, plus disconnecting some of the linkage rods at the joints. The wiper arms don't have clips - you have to pry off the cover, then remove a 12mm nut, then pry arm off then remove a 27mm nut holding the second part of the arm and pry it off.

The motor can be removed by itself. It will have three bolts that hold it on. Once you take the three bolts out the motor and the gear box will come off. As far as the wipers go the wiper will have a small clip where it attatches to the wiper linkage. This clip slides over and the wiper arm will come off.

Yes. That is what I was talking about. The wiper arm. The whole thing comes off. There is a small clip that has to be kind of pulled out at the end of the wiper where it attaches to the car.

My windshield wipers moter is running but wipers not moving I got a 2002 ponniac Bonneville

If upon turning the switch, you hear either a buzzing or a noise coming from the wiper area but no movement of the windshield wipers, then it becomes likely that there is a mechanical problem. In front wiper systems, there are two moving parts, the wiper motor and the wiper transmission. In rear wiper systems with a single wiper, there’s a single moving part, the wiper motor.

If you hear a buzz, it could be a motor straining to move a jammed wiper transmission or a locked motor gear. If you hear a grind coming from the wiper area, it could be a stripped gear in either the motor, the transmission or where the wiper arm splines to the wiper motor in the rear. Don’t let the term transmission fill you with dread; it’s simply a term for a multi-lever set of arms and hinges that turn the circular motion of the wiper motor into the side to side motion of the wiper arms. It is also possible that the spline on the post of the front wiper arms is stripped.

Generally speaking, you can reach the motor and transmission by removing the wiper arms, all the screws that hold the cowl beneath the wiper arms and the weather stripping. Once exposed, you should be able to remove the motor from the transmission and check to see if the transmission is binding or if the motor is the culprit. Simply, replace the culprit, and reassemble.

If the problem is with the rear wiper system, getting to the wiper motor can be more difficult with far more trim to remove than with a front system. You may elect to consult your mechanic for help.

Wiper not working

Sounds like you damaged the gear drive that operates the wiper arms, time for new wiper motor assembly is my guess. Don't use the wipers to brush off snow, very bad idea, the drive gears are plastic and on this old dog very brittle from age.

Wiper linkage and pivot assy bad? 2 left shafts rotate under power, but far right shaft does not (turns hard by hand)

You have power so electric is ok..Sounds like you have stripped wiper arm connections/post and/or wiper motor gear...or possibly bent operating assembly,,,first remove the arms from the post.they should have a small locking device just under the arm at the bottom..move it out and the arm can be released and removed..once both are off check for stripping on arm and wiper if not stripped turn the wipers on see if they operate..if they do shut them off and let them come to a normal stop...then reapply the blades in the normal operating positions and turn on,,adust if needed..if not check for bent and binding of the rods..It not the motor gear or motor will need to be replaced..If you are mechanically inclined it is nit that hard of a job..there are good videos on UTUBE just ask how to replace wiper motor for you vehicle.Good luck..

Drierside wiper not working

if just one wiper arm is working then there might be something wrong with the linkage between the two wiper arms. there is only one wiper motor so if one arm is working that eliminates it as the problem. also check the connection between the wiper arm and the linkage. if you can move the arm when the wipers are off the connector may be stripped out. this happens a lot in the winter when people try to clear a heavy load of snow from the windshield with the wipers. it might also be just be loose and need adjustment

My windshield wipers will not work but i hear the motor trying to work. what does this mean? are they totally broke or is there a simple fix?

Sounds like the link rod has popped off or the wiper arm nuts need tightened. When the wipers freeze to the windshield and you start the wipers to clear the snow this will either strip out the wiper arms or pop the linkage rod off. Always pull the wipers away from the windshield before you start the wiper motor in cold weather to be sure they are not frozen to the windshield. Ok how to repair. Grab the wiper arms and see if they freely move in thier normal pattern with power off. Do they move independantly of each other ? If your lucky the nut holding the arms to the pivot just needs tightened. At the base of each arm is a black cover you have to pry up th see the nut. If not remove the wiper arms and inspect to see if they are stripped out. If they are stripped out bad enough you may have to replace them. If not then the linkage has popped off beneath the drainage grill. To see the link rods move look down thru the grill with the wiper motor running and the wiper arms off and you may see the rod flopping around. Now pry the plastic grills off, with the power off, left side first to get to the rod. Look to see if the plastic retainer in the end that fell off is still ok if so just line it up and give it a smack to pop it back on to the ball stud. If the shaft that is installed onto the motor is spinning but not moving the rod the motor must be replaced. Oopen hood and remove three bolts holding the motor to the firewall to remove it. Just reverse the process to reinstall. Thanks for asking at Fixya.com.

I have one wiper that does not work the other stops in the middle of the windshield how can i fix them

The motor could be bad, but it's likely that the ball joint connections under the hood area under the cowl have become disconnected for the one windshield wiper arm.

The connection of the arm that moves should be checked for being at the correct angle for parking.

Replaced wiper motor, twice, when i turn it on the arms move about two inches, then stop .then they.sound like there slipping .just move up &down about two inches. 88 celebrity

This doesn't sound like a motor problem but a gear stripped. The motor and gear are normally sold and installed as a single unit. See if you can move the arm manually. If you get a lot of slop it could be a stripped gear. Turn the wipers on and move the arm manually. It may catch and than stop at the broken part of the gear.
