Does my 1999 jeep grand cherokee, have a smart chip in the key. I went to have an ignition key made, the company employee said the key was made with a computer chip and a copy would not work in this vehicle. I was told the key would run at least 60.00 to replace.

Not sure if that key has the chip but the price is correct. get your vin number, take it to a jeep dealer they should be able to tell you about the chip

Jeep has a chip in the key sounds like your anti theft is kicking in. The car will only run for a few seconds then shut off. I think it would require reprogramming of your computer. Some times company's on eBay can do the programming for a fraction of the cost
Sounds like you need to perform a relearn on the anti theft system, it's not recognizing the key if this happens with the key inserted. Might want to look online for a reset procedure for Jeep. GM has you keeping the key in the ignition in the on position for 10 minutes.
Probably because the new key has a different code chip than the one that came with the Jeep when it was new. You would need to have a new key to fit the new lock cylinder that matches the old chip.
This sounds like a bad chip in the key, try a spare key, if it starts with spare key then key is bad, if it doesnt start then you will need reprograming
Is there a little key icon staying lit on the right side of your dash? If so it's a sentry key, which is an immobilizer key. You need the gray one to start the Jeep the blacks one is not chipped.
