Remove number one spark plug, crank engine till compression is felt then line up tdc mark, this is number one on compression stroke ,fit distributer with rotor pointing to number one on the cap, it may take a few goes as the rotor turns as it is inserted , if the cables have been removed from the cap insert them in the direction the rotor turns in the firing order. start engine and set timing with light. rev engine to make sure timing advance is working.

When the engine is a top dead center on cyl one put the distributor in so the rotor points to the no1 spark plug wire trminal on the cap try that let me know if it helps

this is a step by step instruction how to set dist when it was disturbed

    Timing Disturbed

Remove the No. 1 cylinder spark plug.

Turn the engine using a socket wrench on the large bolt on the
front of the crankshaft pulley. Place a finger near the No. 1 spark plug
hole and turn the crankshaft until the piston reaches Top Dead Center
(TDC). As the engine approaches TDC, you will feel air being expelled by
the No. 1 cylinder. If the position is not being met, turn the engine
another full turn (360 degree). Once the engine's position is correct,
        install the spark plug.

Align the pre-drilled indent hole in the distributor driven gear
with the white painted alignment line on the lower portion of the shaft
        housing.

Using a long screwdriver, align the oil pump drive shaft in the engine in the mating drive tab in the distributor.

Install the distributor in the engine.

When the distributor is fully seated, the rotor segment should be
aligned with the pointer cast in the distributor base. The pointer will
have a "6" or "8" cast into it indicating a 6 or 8-cylinder engine. If
the rotor segment is not within a few degrees of the pointer, the
distributor gear may be off a tooth or more. If this is the case repeat
the process until the rotor aligns with the pointer.

Install the cap and fasten the mounting screws.

Install the hold-down clamp and bolt, then tighten the bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

Engage the electrical connections and the spark plug wires.

I took the distributor out of my 85 ranger w\out marking where the rotor was . I put all the timing marks wher theyr supposed to be and the distributor back in but it wont start now. What do i do

Pull #1 spark plug and bring that cylinder up (turn crank pulley) until air starts to blow out ( this is the compression stroke) and the timing mark on the front crank pulley is pointed at 0 top dead center TDC for short. Then reinstall the distributor with the rotor pointed towards the number 1 spark plug wire contact inside the distributor cap.

if it has no distributor, the timing chain may be off a few degrees. if it has a distributor you might be able to compensate for it by turning one way or the other. if this fails. bring number 1 cylinder up at top dead center all the way to top of cylinder just before it starts to go back down. pull out the # 1 plug first, and put a straw or similar on top of piston to bring to top you can tell if its on very top by feeling the straw. this will bring it to top dead center. then adjust from there, turn the engine by the damper pulley in front of engine. if it has a distributor then the rotor button will be facing # 1 wire or p[ost in distributor. if the rotor does not point to # 1 when all the way up, then you can adjust dist. to make up for it or the chain is a hare off. have a good day !!

hawkie74542, As you are standing in front of the vehicle looking at the engine the spark plug on the right in the front is the number one cylinder. Remove the spark plug. On your crank shaft pulley find the timing mark and mark it with some whiteout or anything else that will show up well. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the mark lines up with zero on the timing gauge on the engine. When you have done this, with a long screwdriver check the hole where the number one spark plug was. You should not be able to put the screw driver in too far as the top of the piston should be right there at the top of the cylinder. This will get you to top dead center. The rotor should be pointing directly at the number one spark plug. Tighten the distributor down but not all the way as you will need to turn the distributor for the final timing. Replace the spark plug and wire and with a timing light finish the timing procedure. Good luck with this.

Sounds like your engine jumped time. I would match the Top dead center line on the crank with the TDC line on the block . Remove the number 1 spark plug. being VERY careful use a screw driver to enter the spark plug hole. It should stop right away . if the screw driver goes almost all the way in? Do 1 more revelution on the crank to the Top dead center mark. Now that you have achieved this. Take the distributor cap off. The rotor should be on Number one plug wire on the cap. If it isn't far off? loosen the distributor screw and turn the mechanism until the rotor is at number one plug wire. replace the cap and plug and try starting it. If the problem is still present? Your motor needs a timing chain.

What are the timing specs in a 1999 chevy S10.......once you pull pull out a distributor cap,how do you get it back in and set it back to #1

Turn crank so #1 piston is at top dead center.(remove #1 spark plug try putting a straw in the cylinder.BUT do not let it fall all the way in.) Turn crank so #1 pistion travels all the way to the top.(watch the strawit will just start to go back down)Put the Distributor in and align your rotor bug with the#1 plug wire on the cap.uU may have to pull the dist., up and realing the gear splines again in order to align the rotor .then set you timeing.

How do you set the timing on a 1998 GMC Sierra?

The timing is not adjustable and it is computer controlled, but the distributor must still be clocked in properly and static timed, and here is how it is done.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This static timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to the mark or notch on the distributor housing, the engine should now be static timed.

I chaange the distribor and now i cant get it to start back up

I would suggest pulling it apart, verifying the right equipment. Then when you go to put everything back together. Make sure you're getting good connections on everything.

96 chevy cheyenne V6 4.3 liter how do i put back the distributor back in

remove the number one spark plug, get some one to hold there finger over plug hole till it blows your finger off the plug hole, bumping the starter slowly till it blows off, stop there to see if number one piston is all the way up top dead center, drop in distrubutor with rotor pointing at number one on the cap , after its in ,seated, look to insure the rotor is pinting to number one on distributor cap, that should crank there till you can get a timing lihgght on it, hope this helps you ,thanks robert b.
