It really depends on what you are going to use it for. I use a small charger when I just want to maintain a battery. I use mine also for keeping the battery up while I am performing computer diagnostics on a vehicle without the engine running.
The charger I use is a DSR Pro Series Model PSC 12500A It is fully automatic and has a 125 Amp boost. It is very compact and easy to use. It has LED's that tell you the condition of your battery, the charging rate, etc.
I purchased mine from Matco Tools (Matco part number MIC1200) It is available through many local parts suppliers as well as online automotive parts and equipment suppliers.

This all depends on what you are trying to do, if you have a car that sits alot you may what a battery tender that you can leave connected to battery until you use the car, this will keep battery charged as needed and shut off when charged, if want a battery charger to have around then i would get a shop type, this would be one that will do 6-12 volts and has settings for 12 low , 12 high and 12 jump start, it will also have 6volt low and high but not really needed, and will have a timer so you can set it and leave it and it will shut down at the time it is set for, for example go to a napa web site, and check out these part #sthis is a full use one 85-810 or a tender one is730-5033 or a small charger 730-5034. you can also check out sears and get a craftsman charger. hope this helps,

Got an 01 HD XLH 1200. What is the procedure to charge the battery and will my 2amp charger be enough to do the job?

Batteries must be charged at no more than 10% of their rated ah rating. A 2A charger will be fine on a 19Ah battery.
I haven't been in a modern HD, I have a 1965 XLCH1000.

Can you leave the Go Go battery plugged in for four months

If the battery charger is of the top-off variety (a VOLTAGE MONITOR variety), YES. This type of charger monitors the battery's stored voltage level, and only charges the battery once the battery's voltage falls below the voltage the charger was designed to come on. After the battery is charged bck to above this threshold, the charger turns off, and goes into standby mode until the battery's voltage falls enough again. If however the charger is of the type such that it is ALWAYS putting voltage on the battery clamps or leads (a TRICKLE charger) then NO, you MUST NOT leave a battery connected to this type charger indefinitely. But there is a way that you can. Buy a plug-in lamp timer like then kind you set to turn lights on and off at different times so people think there is someone there when you are away (these are cheaper than buying a top-off charger). Set the timer to come on at midnight and go off at 2:00 AM all 7 days, and the battery is not getting overcharged, and you don't have to worry about overcharged battery disaster: swollen, cracked case; leaky battery; exploding or burning battery.

Why does my battery charger only go on float charge

If you are saying the charger is staying on the very low side of charge for a dead battery .depending on the type charger you have it may be your battery is too low for your charger to get the dead battery going..sometimes I need to give a completely dead battery a jolt to get it going..if you have or know some one has a jump start type charger that puts out very high amps for starting..have them give it a few min of that high amp charge..if you have a battery where you can take the cals off you should see the cells bubbling...All cells must show some or it is shorted. Just don't let on more the a min or two...good luck

Honda foremen Es help battery charger get to battery

To hook up any kind of charger you need battery terminals in an open area where you can get to them, my suggestion would be take the battery out and charge it.. It's the only way if you have no room to hook the charger

I have a problem,, that my jaguar x type 2.0 D does start all the time. The weather hasn't been kind, with snow and minus condition. I've never had a problem with my car til now, I've had to have it jump...

You can try insulating your battery (cold might still get thru) or purchasing a solar recharge kit from an aftermarket company. Cold weather will affect the chemical reaction between the plates of the battery and will not put out the high amperage required. I would also recommend to keep a portable battery booster in case you cant get a solar charger. Keep the booster in a warm bag inside your trunk and always charged for when this happens. Keep it during the duration of your winter weather. In summer you will be fine.

Charging the battery safely

I wish more people would ask this question.First of all get yourself a good charger, one that will do 2 AMPS and up on a positioning switch.Take the positive lead from the charger(RED) and clip it to the postive terminal of the battery,it will be clearly marked with a + sign or the lead will be red as well. Then take the negative clip(black) and attach it to the negative terminal OR a good clean section of the frame. Then turn the charger on/plug it in. When removing the clips remove the negative first and then the positive(this is really important because you don't want to cause a spark). If it is wet damp,or really foggy DO NOT try to charge the battery,I have seem them explode under these conditions. The other alternative is to purchase the type of charger that connects permanently to the battery and all you have to do is plug it in. This is a good option to keep the battery up in cold weather.Hope this helps ,good luck

My 2000 Yamaha golf cart has 6-4cell 8 volt batteries. I did not leave the cart plugged in during the winter months. When I attempted to charge yesterday, the charger lights sequenced but stayed on...

Yes to both questions. the charger must sense 41.5 volts to activate the relay inside the charger. Being a repair shop, I have a charger that is rigged to charge even DEAD batteries. I do not recommend this for the novice. A charger set on 12 volts will bring the batteries back up to 8.2-8.6 volts. A cheap trickle charger may not put out enough to charge a battery of this size. Remember that they are used to MAINTAIN a charge. Connect the Voltmeter and watch for voltage rise. If it rises to 8.1 or above, it is charging. Trojan battery company recommends charging at least once a month.
