I have a 1998 jeep grand cherokee with a 4.0 engine. As I was driving, the engine died. I have replaced the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, crank sensor, cam sensor and coil. It will turn over, but ir won't start. There isn't spark at the plugs or coil. One more thing, it does get gas to the fuel rail.

You really should be using a good manual as a guide fro testing. For wiring diagrams chiltons is better than haynes. Have you checked power flow through the ASD relay??

What will cause a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee to stall out while driving and idling? We have replaced fuel screens, O-rings, idle air intake valve, coil, distributor cap and rotor, plugs, wires cam crank

Check the ground straps. From the battery to the engine. From the battery to the body, and the engine to the body. If you can't find one. Put it on.

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee (4.0L) engine. It has power but will not crank. The battery is reading enough voltage.

You can put in your gasoline tank injector cleaner which cleans and unclogs the injectors first. If this does not help you then check one of the spark plugs to see if it is getting any spark to the tip of plug but have someone to check one of the plugs for you safely. Then you can also check inside the distributor cap and rotor to see the connections have not turned black which means no connections to each spark plug when the rotor goes around inside the distributor cap and if you see the connections inside the dist. cap that you need to replace them both. If you take the old distributor cap and rotor to make sure you put the new one the same way you took off the old one by using a permanent black or white marker and make a straight line from one of the outlets where one of the spark plug wire comes from to where the alignment will help you put the newer distributor cap. You can also take a photo of the distributor cap but on top view and then when you take if off to also take a photo view of the rotor as well.

97 200 miles 4.0 grand cherokee dies backfires starts and sometimes it doesn't start right back up. strong fue; smell too. have replsced o2 cam sensor ignition switch fuel pump acoil thing. This seems to...

Sounds like your engine jumped time. I would match the Top dead center line on the crank with the TDC line on the block . Remove the number 1 spark plug. being VERY careful use a screw driver to enter the spark plug hole. It should stop right away . if the screw driver goes almost all the way in? Do 1 more revelution on the crank to the Top dead center mark. Now that you have achieved this. Take the distributor cap off. The rotor should be on Number one plug wire on the cap. If it isn't far off? loosen the distributor screw and turn the mechanism until the rotor is at number one plug wire. replace the cap and plug and try starting it. If the problem is still present? Your motor needs a timing chain.

Check engine light will not go out giving a multiple cylinder misfire code on 4 &6

Check and/or replace the easy stuff first. Spark plugs (all), plug wires, Distributor cap and rotor. If these don't solve it have a wet and dry compression test and fuel pressure test done. those tests will get you in the right direction.

good luck

1995 jeep grand cherokee with 4.0 engine back fires through air fliter box when driving and the vehicle loses power.

Possibilities can include:

Clogged catalytic converter - needs replacement or removal.

engine timing off - adjust the camshaft position sensor.

distributor cap & rotor - replace along with new spark plugs and wires

Spark plugs

Firing order for the 4.0L 6-cylinder is as follows:

1-5-3-6-2-4

As for the spark plugs, it looks like the Autolite AL 985 plugs are what you need. If you are going to replace the plugs, might as well also replace the plug wires, the distributor cap and rotor (if you have those, I dont recall which year they went to the distributorless ignition).

Need diagram for 1998 Jeep Cherokee sport spark plug wiring

hi, you didn't say what engine you have, I'll assume it's the 4.0 L in line 6 cylinder. Standing on the PASSENGER side of the jeep, the spark plug at the front of the engine is #1, the next is #2, and so on to #6 which is at the back (nearest the windshield).
The distributor is between you and the valve cover on the engine. Pretend the top of the distributor cap is the face of a clock.
The #1 spark plug wire goes in the cap at what would be the 6 o'clock position, (as viewed from your position standing on the passenger side, facing the side of the engine). The firing order direction is clockwise, so the 'hand' of the clock (actually the rotor in the cap) would continue to the next distributor cap plug in, which would be spark plug wire to #5 (8 o'clock position), then #3 (10 o'clock position), #6 (12 o'clock position), #2 (2 o'clock position), #4 (4 o'clock position). So all this means isi your firing order is, 1,5,3,6,2,4 If you have a different motor or any questions, let me know. Good Luck! countrycurt0
