Did you install a new fuel pump? Because the fuel level sender is part of the pump. There are hoses that connect to vapor recovery from the tank check and make sure they are not lose. Take the cap off and clean where it threads in. I have seen where gunk builds up and does not let the cap seat properly because it isnt going all the way in.get a new cap at the dealership. I bought new caps at the parts store and the light still came on.got the correct one at dealer and as soon as i started my car the light went off .

SOURCE: 92 XJ6 Fuel pump/filter

hi sometimes on most cars if lift up the back seat ther usually the pump unit on the top of the tank with two pipes coming out of it .if ypu can find the relay for the fuel pump connect the terminals 30 to 87 together you should hear the fuel pump run.alternitavely check the power to the fuel pump with a multimeter you should get 12 volt when trying to start also check for broken wirig to pump.

Hi

I believe you mean the locking ring, which secures the Fuel Tank Guage Sender / Fuel Pump into the tank.

Let me know if we are on the same wave length ?

Please give me a FixYa Rating please, i´m almost a Guru !

SOURCE: 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Won't start.

if your fuel pump and relay are new, how about your fuel filter, if your fuel pump is working but no fuel turns out, check fuel pump polarity, if ok, there will be a clogging in fuel lines, take a high pressure air and plug it to fuel outlet in fuel lines test port, allow air to go back up to fuel tank and observe if the air goes, if not, check or change fuel line, if the air goes to tank, direct your fuel relay pin 30 and 87 and check if the fuel runs to the injectors, if not, change a good fuel pump

I have a 1999 pontiac montana.it ran out of gas,i put 4 gal in it,and it wont start,is there areset button some where that stops power to the fuel pump or js it the fuel pump itself?

  • Very possibly could be the fuel pump. Often times when running the tank dry on pumps, especially ones that have been in the tank for a while and are partially clogged already, all the contaminants get caught up in the sock on the fuel pump and it becomes clogged and collapses and the pump fails.
  • When you turn the key to the on position do you hear the fuel pump hum? If not this could be the fuel pump relay and I would suggest to check this before tearing into the pump.
  • You may want to check that fuel filter too as they get clogged and prevent the vehicle from starting as well.
  • Make sure the gas cap is on tight as well. Sometimes a vehicle will not start if the gas cap is not on tight of is on crooked. Check the seal on the gas cap too for cracks and or rips/tears. Try a dab of engine oil around the gasket to help it seal and make sure it clicks a few times after it twisted on.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

My 2000 chevy tracker wont start.starter is cranking but motor wont fire.lately when fuel is low it starts making a horribe clanking noise.like its choking.a local mechanic said its probaly fuel...

The fuel tank needs a certain amount of pressure to operate the fuel pump. Make sure the gas cap is tight, believe it or not if the fuel cap is loose or faulty the check engine light will come on. It could also be the fuel filter or also the fuel pump.

Check Gas Cap alarm comes on and engine light is on

You gas cap is not on tight enough to seal causing the Check Engine Light to come on. When you tighten your gas cap you need to tighten it until it clicks at least 5 times, if it is tight than the seal on the gas cap may be bad. Replace with a OEM GM gas cap or a quality replacement that meets OEM specs.

Smell of petrol inside the car

I had a similar problem with a 92 when I replaced the float/level sensor in the tank. Did you recently change the pump or sensor?
Check the tightness of anything you may have loosened or opened. There is also a line that usually drains water from the depression in which the filler cap sits. If you have a bad cap and even a minor overflow or spill from a fill-up, gas could leak into the trunk and once absorbed into the carpeting it is very difficult to remove the smell from the matting. I power washed mine with solvents and water based detergents, three times and let them air dry each time, finally placing an odor absorbing chemical in the trunk to solve the problem. Good luck hope this helps.

Where is the oil filler cap on my 92 xj6-i want to add oil to it but dont know where it is located

There is a red colored cap under the hood accessible from the driver side when the hood is up. It can be very tight especially if the rubber washer under the cap is worn or lost. It is above the dip sticks for the oil and transmission.

I have Pontiac Grand AM 2001 2.4L I Need Vacuum Diagram The Code PO440 Vacuum Leak E-Mail [email protected]

Lets keep it simple and start with replacing the gas cap first. Don't buy the cheap generic gas cap, buy the OEM dealer gas cap for your car. Your car is 8 years old and the seals in the gas cap get brittle and have cracks, Next time you fill up your gas tank, look at the gas cap and inspect the condition of the seals. Start with that and make sure that when you reinstall the gas cap that it's tight, you want to hear it click three times to insure that it's tight. Good luck and keep me posted, the service light will go off on it's own after the issue has been addressed after 3 start ups and will clear it self from the history after 100 start ups without any issues. Good luck and be glad to answer any questions you may have.
