1989 f150 302 V8 fuel injected emissions problem. Installed new engine from Ford, blew SKY HIGH on low and high idle emissions. Emission numbers were 10-20x max legal limit (over 3000). Replaced the catalytic converter and EGR valve and cleaned the idle air valve and took back to emissions. Truck passed the HIGH IDLE test very well, but still failed the low idle test. The low idle numbers were cut exactly in half, but were still 5-10x the max allowable. QUESTION IS, what can cause JUST THE LOW IDLE emissions to be RIDICULOUSLY HIGH while the high idle is really low.

    A mechanic installed the new engine and it got all new wires, plugs, rotor, cap, alternator, radiator, heater core, rebuilt distributor, etc, etc. No corners were cut to my knowledge. I bought all the parts new. I did not replace the O2 sensor, but I have an ECC IV computer reader/tester that isn't telling me the O2 sensor is bad. It told me "NO EGR FLOW" and thus the reason EGR was replaced. Should I change the O2 sensor even if the computer doesn't say its bad?

    He did tell me that he didnt connect the air hose to the catalytic converter cause he said I was missing the air pipe that ran down there, but it shouldnt effect anything. I must not have had it for awhile and I always passed emissions before.

The O2 sensor works on one volt .5 is around the running voltage, i would refit the air hose as it will run the converter hotter at idle.

the vacuum leak that causes this high idle is the gasket at the bottom of the upper intake manifold runners, they **** in, done 100's. to confirm this just spray carb cleaner at inside and outside base, when u hit the leak you will hear it. see photo.

    seems like those may be two different issues. check for vacuum leaks and have your fuel psi checked. High fuel pressure can change your emissions numbers. I believe the fuel psi should be 30-45 psi. if its way above that then the nest step is to check the fuel pressure regulator

    Need an emissions schamatic for my 1984 K10 silverado 305 engine

    Unfortunately, there are 13 variations for this engine and year. Was this truck sold or modified for high altitude? Was it sold in California or modified to meet the CA emission standards? Does it have a manual or auto transmission? After narrowing down based on answers to these questions, there are still alternative configurations depending on the particular equipment, so look carefully at the diagrams to see which components are used on your engine. Sometimes you can match the 3 letter code for the diagram to letters in the VIN or a sticker in the engine compartment. Please let me know if you have questions.

    High emisions new cat new sensor

    Hi.

    High emission are often consequence of engine problems. In that case the new cat converter or exhaust and new oxygen sensors will not help.

    High emission from engine occurs because of many different reasons, main causes are:

    Electronic injection problems:

    Do an OBDII scan to find out if there are error codes. If there are no codes check injectors sensors in the air intake (MAF and IAC), check vacuum for leaks. Clean throttle body. Check EGR, IAC, PCV systems.

    Engine internal problems:

    Do a compression test to find problems associated with engine faults (eg.piston rings, head gasket, valves).

    Also make sure that spark plug, fuel and air filter have been replaced. Make sure that there is no misfire or distribution problem.

    What is emission system

    THE EMISSION SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO TRAP AND STORE FUEL VAPORS THAT EVAPORATE FROM THE FUEL TANK.THROTTLE BODY AND INTAKE MANIFOLD DURING NON OPERATION OR IDLING STORE THEM IN THE CHARCOAL CANISTER AND THEN ROUTE THEM INTO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER TO BE BURNED DURING ENGINE OPERATION.THE PCV VALVE ITS PART OF THE EMISSION SYSTEM.IT SCAVENGING CRANKCASE VAPORS IT DOES THIS BY CIRCULATING FRESH AIR FROM THE AIR CLEANER THROUGH THE CRANKCASE WHERE IT MIXES WITH BLOW BY GASES AND IS THEN REROUTED THROUGH A PCV VALVE TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD.THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS PART OF THE EMISSION SYSTEM IT REDUCE POLLUTANTS FROM THE EXHAUST GAS STREAM IT LOWERS LEVELS OF OXIDES OF NITROGEN AS WELL AS HYDROCARBONS AND CARBON MONOXIDE.THE EGR VALVE PART OF EMISSION SYSTEM IT LOWER OXIDES OF NITROGEN EMISSION LEVELS CAUSED BY HIGH COMBUSTION TEMPERATURES.THE EGR VALVE RECIRCULATES A SMALL AMOUNT OF EXHAUST GASES INTO INTAKE MANIFOLD.SMOG PUMP IS ALSO EMISSION CONTROL COMPONENT IT INJECTING AIR INTO THE EXHAUST DOWNSTREAM FROM THE EXHAUST PORTS TO HELP COMPLETE THE COMBUSTION OF ANY UNBURNED GASES AFTER THEY LEAVE THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER.

    This sounds like a normal condition.What happens is the cold start emission reduction component monitor(software program in the computer) is running.
    Cold Start Emission Reduction Component Monitor
    The Cold Start Emission Reduction Component Monitor was introduced for the 2006 MY on vehicles that meet the
    LEV-II emission standards. The monitor works by validating the operation of the components of the system
    required to achieve the cold start emission reduction strategy, namely retarded spark timing and elevated idle
    airflow.
    When the CSER strategy is enabled, the idle air control system will request a higher idle rpm, elevating engine
    airflow. While this CSER elevated airflow is requested, the low airflow test compares the measured idle airflow from
    the MAF sensor to the commanded idle airflow from the idle air control strategy.
