Soft roof does not open

Find the two plastic caps sitting behind the sun visor on either side of the car. Gently prise them out, be careful as years of sun may have made them brittle. Behind the caps you should see a hexagonal head that the manual roof tool fits into (failing that use an allen key). Turning these hex heads will unlock the front soft top locks. (can't recall if it was clockwise or anti-clockwise, so be careful!). I found that you need to start one side, then unlock the other side, then come back to the first side and finish the job off. At this stage you should be able to lift the top up slightly to see it's no longer engaged in the front locks. Now move to the boot.

In the back of the boot you should see two small pieces of the trim that will lift out. These will be located on each side near the boot hinge mechanisms. Lift the trim peices out and you should see a lever (mine is made from cad plated something or other, ie it's a gold colour) and it will have red paint on it.

Fit the spanner/wrench end of the manual roof tool, or otherwise a 10mm open ended spanner, onto the small nut welded into the end of that red lever. I started on the left side(passenger side), levering gently down will unlock, and gently up will lock). You may need to alternate between each side, undoing a little and then swapping. NOTE: I found the levers won't budge unless the soft or hard top 'pins' are physically sitting in the lock holes. Don't force the levers as they should move quite easily.

Now that you have both the front and back locks undone, the last part is to unlock the tonneau or rear deck (soft top roof compartment). To do this you need the 10mm spanner/wrench again. You will find two hex heads tucked down in between the roll bar and the side of the interior trim (about 6-8 inches from the door frames), fit the spanner onto the head and turn until the tonneau cover releases. You should now be able to fold the soft top down by first raising the rear section of the soft top until the back lip is pointing to the sky, then lift the front section along with the rear section down into the compartment. I guess getting it back out is a reverse of the procedure above. Hoepfully I've got it all right as I've done it from memory.

A part of the mechinical components that operate the foor is sticking, have some one try to open it whilc you examine and see there this clicking sound(something slipping) is comping from, more than likely is a gear or a component that turns or wroks with motion.

If you have read all of the Soft top threads, have you readthe fault codes associated with soft top issues with the flashing soft topswitch mounted on the centre console? if so what error codes are indicated onyour vehicle?

Usually if the hydraulic reservoir under the spare wheel is up to level and nosign of any leaks, hydraulics are normally not the issue.

Run the soft top cycle again and when it fails, count the flashes from the softtop switch on the centre console and check against the DTC codes in the softtop stickys. there is an easy way to renew the hydraulic fluid but I don'tthink that this is your problem and the system purges itself of any air thatmight get in it.

You mentioned that the car sat for two years. Is there a possibility that thebattery could be low even after a recharge? You may want to try your top withthe car outside and the engine running.
You didn't mention anything about your side windows. Are they both in the fulldown position when you are trying to raise or lower? They must be down.

Your post indicates extensive checks on the electrical components and turned out all check outs, could it be possible that there is another component, a hydraulic one? If yes, perhaps you need to check on the hydraulic pump to check if it they are active. Likewise a check on the fluid level would be in order. Design wise, hydraulic pumps for this purpose would be pretty near their load (in your case the softroof) and therefore would be at the trunk (boot). It would be very close to the end of the metal frame that moves the softroof, perhaps hidden by a cover (for aesthetic reasons).

Additionally, pls check the windows, as I was made to understand that they have to be lowered down before the softroof will initiate movement. Further same windows activate/trigger a sensor/switch that enables/disabes softroof deployment. Just curious, was the car just washed prior to the occurrence of the problem? If yes, you may want to check for corrosion on the switches/terminals/electrical contacts of this switch.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

A roof is opened and closed by utilizing a trunk lid for opening and closing a trunk room. The trunk lid can be raised and lowered while it is held substantially horizontal. The trunk lid is provided with a roof slide unit for moving the roof in longitudinal directions. When opening the roof in a closed state, the trunk lid is raised to a position behind the roof, and the roof is moved rearwardly by the roof slide unit to be supported by the trunk lid. Then, the trunk lid is lowered down to a position to close the trunk room. This brings an end to an operation of opening the roof. A reverse procedure may be taken for closing the roof.

Test the rooftop lifting motor, check with a tester if power is getting to the motor. If the motor get voltage in contacts, then the motor is faulty, replace it.
If there is no power to motor, then simply rebuild the circuit from switch to fuse or from fuse to motor, testing in what part is the problem (test if you get power in fuse contacts).
