Cylinderhead torque settings

I'm not sure what engine you have in your 95 grand am SO I will give you both the 4cyl and 6cyl Specs. Also you didn't ask for the torque sequence. I will include that as well for both. 2.3 DOHC Quad 4cyl: Torque sequence---> front ' 7 3 1 5 9 ' of engine ' 8 6 2 4 10 ' Step 1: torque bolts 1 thru 6 (26 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Step 2: torque bolts 7 & 8 (15 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Step 3: torque bolts 9 & 10 (22 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION *** This engine uses "Torque To Yield" (TTY) head bolts that means they permanently stretch during the initial installation. New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is replaced or re-installed in order to obtain proper torque. 3.1 liter V6 Torque sequence--> ' 6 2 3 7 ' ' 5 1 4 8 ' Step 1: torque bolts in sequence to 33 Ft/Lbs Step 2: turn an additional 90 degrees Recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION *** This particular engine uses "Torque To Yield" head bolts(TTY) (that means the bolts permanently stretch during the initial installation.) You MUST use NEW head bolts when replacing or reinstalling the cylinder head in order to obtain the proper torque.

NOTE
If possible, replacement of the head bolts is suggested.
  1. If replacement of the head bolts is not possible, perform the following bolt measurement:
    1. Measure the diameter of the head bolt 0.43 in. (11mm) from the bottom of the bolt.
    2. Measure the diameter of the head bolt 1.89 in. (48mm) from the bottom of the bolt.
    3. Whenever the size difference between the 2 measurements exceeds 0.0043 in. (0.11mm) the head bolts must be replaced.
  2. Install the cylinder head bolts and torque in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
    2. Step 2: Completely loosen all bolts.
    3. Step 3: 25-33 ft. lbs. (34-44 Nm).
    4. Step 4: plus 90-95 degrees clockwise.
    5. Step 5: plus 90-95 degrees clockwise.

How do i remove the head from my saturn 1.9 engine?

Removing it isn't too hard, replacing it is another story. Drain antifreeze. The top radiator hose will need to be taken loose. Air intake from front of car to filter. The fuel lines...You just need to pinch the plastic clips with a pair of needle nose pliers while you pull on the lines. The timing chain will need to come off, make sure the marks are at top dead center, bottom and top sprocket. You will need to take off the EGR valve, The vacuum lines on top of the throttle body. Vacuum line under Air intake. Throttle cable, manifold exhaust, 02 sensor, A/C compressor if you have one, just lay it aside...doesn't need to be discharged. Power steering pump need to take the bolts out of it by turning the sprocket so you can get a deep dwell socket in it...about 3 or 4 bolts there. The tension pulley needs to be taken off, of course after the belt is taken off. A few other things that are obvious by looking. Most importantly, have the head tested before putting on new gasket. The bolts should all be replace on the head since they are torque to yield. The torque procedure is 25lbs, all then 35lbs. all then turn the wrench on all of the bolts from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock which equals 90 degrees. That will give you the torque to yield...
