Question about 1992 Volkswagen GTI

3 Answers

1992 GTI, Mk2, 2L(2E) 8valve. Engine cuts out sometimes when car comes to a halt and has to idle, this occurs whether the engine is hot or cold and anytime of the day or night. Another thing i noticed was the rev needle jumping up and down irraticaly from time to time only at night when cars lights are switched on in driving and when car is started battery light would stay on until accelaration. In the interim, I have replaced the following with new parts, the plugs, plug leads, distributor cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter and fuel pump. Please advise of a solution.

Hi

the cause wil be the air mass meter also known as the air mass sensor, when this fails the car struggles for air and hence cuts out, this is made worse when the lights are on at night as the car will be trying to compensate the failed air sensor with more power so it will **** more power from the battery to keep the engine running, when you put the lights on it wil make it harder for the altenator to provide power to everything at once, very common fault on this car.

Regards

Dan

    Hi Mark
the air mass meter is located on the air pipe, identifiable by a wired plug going into the air system, would you like me to send a picture for you? you can change this part yopur self, and a lot of times you can clean it. Bare with me I will look for a picture.
    Regards
    Dan

Hi Mark, this car has been modified but the part still looks the same, could be on either side of the car engine but you are looking for that metal part made from alloy attached with a black cap and a wire going to it. More often than not this type of air mass meter need to be replaced, inside the black cap is a spring loaded wire that reacts when you hold the throttle down, sometimes they simply fail from moving correctly.

    Hope this helps
    Regards
    Dan

Also mark, there may be an inverted screw kind of like a hole with a screw hidden inside, you can sometimes get them going againg by turning the screw to allow more air, sorry it's been a while since I worked on cars this age, modern cars are just a plug and go sensor. be careful with the adjustment, you will have to have the car running so you can hear the difference in the idle while you turn it.

    Regards
    Dan

    Hi Dan,
Thanks, now I know what that is, I recognise that box. Its a "'Bosch"' part thats attached to the air box in my case.

Fast idle cold to hot

to fast hot and too fast cold that it?
well here is normal, its a G16 engine, a Vitara with Sidekick badge.
G16 in cold weather, start and race idle at about 1500 rpm
or more if in ALASKA, you never said that or how cold it is.
the IAC valve is thermal, it and opens more colder, a fact.
the 8valve engine (black steel top) is faster. cold idle
then drops in a few seconds, to 1500rpm
at this time, the ECU brain does NOT control idle speeds at all.
the the engine warms up by virtue of the thermostat
as it warms to 150F to on way to 180f stock temp.
the ECU then takes control of the idle speeds.
got that so far?
so at 180f the idle is 800 rpm (800 is hard coded in the ECU,
ad ECU regulates this, unless you turn on the A.C , and if that happens 1000rpm is called up.
if not the ECU cant control it or the ECU is in limphome mode or worse.

if you insert the diagnostic jumper
does the CEL lamp flash 12s
it must.
see this paper clip this is your only scan tool.
it is crude but that is all you get until 1996.

DO you have any engine codes still remaining? IF car restarts right away its gonna be tricky finding out what is dropping out. Engine codes are the best clue to start the hunt for problem. From experience however, I have had a few of these come in for same symptom. There are two wires that run from Ignition module/coil pack to the crank sensor, insulation falls off and they melt to each other or to hot engine, intermittent short disruption of signal, hence car stalls whenever wherever and restarts right away.
