Check your running fuel pump pressure. If (as I suspect) it's too low, first try changing your fuel filter. After changing the filter, recheck the running fuel pump pressure. If still low, check you fuel pump pressure regulator. If OK, you may need a new fuel pump.

Also probably would be a good idea to replace you air filter.

Good luck!

Check engine light on engine acts as if missing new plugs wires and #5 spark pack missing again 6cyl 4x4 3.4 185000 miles

was it running this way before you changed the plugs? just a shot in the dark here possibly a defective spark plug, rare but not impossible. if it was running fine before changing them. Other wise I would take it to autozone and pull codes if it is P0350 #5 misfire we would use the process fuel, fire and compression. is there any engine coolant around any cylinders? Have you checked the coil packs? could be a bad coil pack. if no evidence of fluid around them proceeded to check for spark, fuel then compression. post back results or new post with more deductions. iis it no spark no fuel or bad compression.

Is the gas getting to the engine? First try swapping the fuel pump relay with any similar one in the car. If ti starts and runs the relay is bad. If not check the ASD relay, if you have one. If its bad it also will not start. Next pull the fuel line off at the intake manifold, place in a container, crank engine is fuel coming and good fuel flow? If OK, check air filter not clogged. All OK, verify sparks at all cylinders.

Ford 460 engine

You did not supply the year of the engine. Many defects are picked up by the self-diagnostics in models which have self-diagnostics.

You may not notice that the engine is still missing at higher speeds. One of the tests that can be run is a cylinder-balance test. This electronic test systematically disables individual cylinders and shows how much power each cylinder is contributing to engine power. It will pinpoint the problem cylinder.

It is a lot easier than removing each plug to examine misfires. A Noid light is a tester for fuel injector harnesses. A Ohmmeter can test the fuel injector for continuity.

Once you get a cylinder balance test, it will reduce the testing time and you can concentrate on 1 cylinder.

Engine acted like it was going to stall, then tachometer(rpm) and speedometer jumped up high, gas gauge dropped to empty level though there was half tank of gas acted like it wasn't getting gas pumped gas...

Ignition or fuel problem probably . When you turn the key to start does the engine spin ? Crank no start or nothing happens NO CRANK - NO START ?
If the engine spins an does not start an run you need to test to see what's missing Spark or fuel . Pull a spark plug wire off a spark plug an stick a screw driver in the end an hold it near ground (metal) and have someone try to start the vehicle ! Is there spark ? Spray starting fluid into the engine , does it start then ?
Videos on youtube showing how to do these tests

Engine missing mainly between 45 and 55 mph

I'm going to assume you have the 3.4 V6 engine which uses direct ignition with a coil on each plug.
Could be ignition or fuel related.
A weak spark/coil will allow the engine to run on all 6 cylinders at idle but miss under load, especially when going into overdrive at 45 mph. Not enough spark to jump the gap.
Same thing with low fuel pressure or dirty injectors. Not enough fuel when the engine is working hard.
Usually when you get a hard miss you will get a trouble code for the cylinder that is not giving power.
Have you changed the fuel filter in the past 12 months ?

It sounds like and ignition module is failing periodically and must be replaced, when the engine reaches a certain temperature threshold the electrical component arc out from the silicon sealant that encases the capacitance discharge component.
