Not idling smoothly, sometimes having to restart at a stop w/ tranny in drive.

This problem just popped up out of the blue. It seems to have happened when I parked the car at a store, came out to restart and the problem was
there. I turned the ignition off and on again and prob. went away for a while.
Then one day, about two weeks later, went to start car and would not idle
smooth. Real rough. With a tap on the accelerator pedal it would smooth
out and idle high, then gradually come down to rough idle again. I did find
out though that the problem diminishes when the engine warms up. Could
this be a TPS (throttle position sensor) problem?

I have a Ford Diagnostics printout. I have simular problems, but can add that my tranny is hunting for gears/overdrive at highway speeds due to the rough running? The primary cause is pointing to fuel pressure, I still have yet to find the valve to check the pressure. It is either the pump, the filter or a crimped line. The if the symtoms continue it is off the emmission circuits.

I wish I could find the blasted pressue valve!!

Sure, that could be it. I would also suspect the fuel filter as well.

I am having a problem with a rattle noise while

try U joints or check all you heat shielding on your exhaust it might be harmonic. My 96 300zx rattles alot when i give it some gas and it sounds like tranny but the trans seems to be smooth for the most part and the clutch is relatively new. also check your trans mount. i've seen bolts get loose and it wont knock but it will rattle.

Pops out of gear it's a 5 speed 1.8L went driving shift smooths but then pops out. is it the clutch? or is the tranny blowin ?

Sometimes spray lube on linkages & bushings down at the transmission & at areas where you see movement during shifting, will cure that, otherwise you may need some new bushings at certain areas. Have someone move shifter while you observe different pivot points for too much slop. (movement)

02 dodge stratus only idles but does not run

The same thing happened to my 2000 dodge stratus about a month ago. Turned out my belt had broken sometime. Anyway, the car would crank and run until it got warm (10-15 miles) and then would not shift out of low gear. I got home and thought it was my alternator, but when I went to take it off to replace it I realized there was no belt. (The belt runs several key components that will not allow you to go far without.) So just to rule that out you might want to check to see if the belt is still in place.

Idling RPMs and other concerns

It sounds like the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. This is easy to check. with the car idleing, remove the vacuum hose from the unit, and if it is leaking, gas will come out of the vacuum connection.
If this is the trouble, be sure the replacment unit has an o-ring with it, otherwise the new unit will leak at the fuel rail.

This could be the map sensor issue as well, but check the pressure regulator.

Also, check the hoses near the throttle body area, if there is a vacuum leak, it will do this.

Slippy Tranny

Had the same problem. had the soiniod body changedbeginning of winter. Tranny shift Smoother but problem can back the next spring but less often then before.

Noticed that it was happening on hot day and after driving no more than an hour. Noticed that it was happening also in stop and go traffic.

Sometimes just putting the Tranny at Park and stopping the engine on a RED light fixes the problem.

I haven't gone back to the Tranny Shop.
