I am replacing the intake manifold gaskets on my 2002 4.3 v6 and before i took the distributor out i marked the rotot and housing with the idea that when reinstalling the distributor my lines would match up thus ensuring that i was in the correct spot... my problem is now that i am reinstalling the distributor it will only seat in one location and my lines are not matching up... do you have any idea what my problem could be?

I'm not familiar with this engine,
But if it has a cog on the bottom of the distributor,
And not keyway,
Turn rotor anticlockwise about a inch back from your mark,
Then as you lower the distributor in you will notice the rotor turn clockwise a little,
A few trys should get it to line up fine,
Hope this helps you!

SOURCE: Noise under intake manifold

best thing to do is to take the intake and valve covers off, its possible you may have inadvertently sucked something up and it's in you intake. That is the best solution.

No telling what it is until you take things apart and take a look. It shouldn't be too hard, make sure you get new gaskets, gaskets are cheap anyways.

SOURCE: 1997 Chevy Tahoe Moisture in the distributor Cap

I have the same problem. I punched the screens all the way though that are down in the distributor. This did not correct the problem but it did slow it down. Now I only have to change the cap ever few months. I don't leave home without a spare cap.

2002 Chev S-10 Blazer - Replaced Intake manifold gasket and =now I have a check engine Light - Crank sensor problem - why would this come up now and what can I do to fix it

I would verify that the distributor is in time. I had a customer with a similar problem, check engine light, and running poor. Someone had replaced the distributor, but when they installed it, they installed it one tooth off. There are 2 marks on the crankshaft pulley and 2 marks on the driver's side of the engine's timing cover. Line those up and verify the distributor rotor lines up with the "6" on the distributor housing. I had to turn the oil pump driveshaft back a bit to get the distributor to line up right.

Thermostat

5.0L and 5.8L Engines
  1. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat.
  1. Disconnect the upper radiator hose and the bypass hose from the thermostat housing.
  2. To gain access to the thermostat housing, either mark the location of the distributor, loosen the hold-down clamp and rotate the distributor, or remove the distributor cap and rotor.
  3. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts and the housing and gasket.
  4. Remove the thermostat from the housing.

Fig. 7: Thermostat installation-5.0L and 5.8L engines

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  2. Position a new gasket on the intake manifold.
  3. Install the thermostat in the housing, rotating slightly to lock the thermostat in place on the flats cast into the housing. Install the housing on the manifold and tighten the bolts to 12-18 ft. lbs. (16-24 Nm).
If the thermostat has a bleeder valve, the thermostat should be positioned with the bleeder valve at the 12 o'clock position as viewed from the front of the engine.
  1. Install the distributor cap and rotor, or reposition the distributor for correct ignition timing, as necessary. Tighten the hold-down bolt to 18-26 ft. lbs. (24-35 Nm).
  2. Connect the bypass hose and the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
  3. Fill the cooling system
  4. Check for leaks.

Oil in anti-freeze

That is not a good sign. These are a few ways this can happen. Bad head gasket, bad intake manifold gasket, cracked or warped head, or a cracked engine block. If the intake manifold gasket hasn't been replaced yet, have it checked for leaks. The 3100 and 3400 V6 engines are prone for intake gasket failure.

Lower intake manifold gasket leaking 02 Olds Silhouette

This is basicly a very time consuming job rather than a physically hard one to complete. In order to replace the gasket you must remove the intake plenum, throttle body, and misc. vacuum hoses. The wiring harness connections must also be disconnected. Finally the intake manifold is exposed. The bolts holding the manifold to the block are removed exposing the leaking gasket. After removing the push rods and placing them in the correct order to be replaced the gasket and sealants can be removed. Finally replace everything in reverse order. Be sure to consult a GM manual for correct bolt torch specs. The correct specs for the manifold bolts usually come with the gasket. Make sure to change your oil a few times after this job in case any coolant entered the block. Also, change the thermostat and the oil seal on the distributor half shaft cap while you have everything off. Good Luck
