Automobile electrical problem

Turn signals in 1993 pontia grand prix quit working replaceblinker modual under dash and signal switch in steering column. worked for a few months then quit again. after replacing of switch the car enginie would pulse when the left turn signal was activated. the turn signal lever flots around on the steering column now, also cannot use bright lights (same switch is used to activate bright lights). I checked the fuses none are blown. Before the switch was replace in the column it would blow fuses when turn signal was activated.

Turn signal switch went bad and started causing smoke to come out of the

steering column. Replaced switch, ($200.00) and one year later it went bad

again. (Car is now sitting and I am trying to decide whether to pay another $200.00 or not.

1993 corsica the lights works but the brights don't is the switch broken. or is there a fuse to change

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2014

we bought the car with the screwdriver option. used it to release the key instead of the button on the column, because the release was missing. we took it to a shop to get some other work done, I think because we didn't say anything about the key. they might of jammed it, can't start it or move the key

I hate to say it but GM "W" bodies of that time period ( Regal, Cutlass Supreme, Lumina, and Grand Prix) are notorious for turn signal problems. I'm a machanic and also have owned 3 W body vehicles. The pivot bushing in the switch wears prematurely and in turn causes the copper contacts to barely touch each other. If the contacts are dirty, there is resistance. Where there is resistance, there is heat, hence the smoke. It's just a poor design. What I do instead of replacing the switch requires some time and some surgical skill but it always works for me. At the pivot end of the switch, I remove the screw and remove the metal tube insert. I wrap the metal with electrical tape to take up the slack from the wear then grease the heck out of it. At the contact end I attach a piece of sheet metal to the bottom of the movable part of the switch so it sits underneath the non-moveable part making it so the moveable part can't lift up and lose contact. That's just a vague description but if you want a detailed one let me know and I'll write one. I did it to my '89 Regal 4 yrs. ago and to my wife's Grand Prix 1 yr. ago and they both still work great. Just a design flaw in the switch. Sometimes you have to pick up wher the car companies left off! beest921

I have a 2001 potiac grand prix with no tail lights the same bulb work turn signal an brake lights they r fine ive checked all fuses and replaced all bulbs even replaced the light switch still no tail

no, they are not the same. The multifunction switch is on the steering column and controls wipers, turn signals, and hi/low beam headlights. Dash switch is on the dash and generally turns lights on and off and frequently also controls brightness of dash lights. I had a Camry that had the same thing happening...ended up having a toggle switch put in to control the tail lights...fixed the issue.

Turn signals not working but hazards do

Hi, your car has separate flasher relays for the turns and the hazards. Replace the turn flasher, Front seating area, driver side, under dash, mounted on passenger side of steering column.
Thanks for using FixYa.

I own a 1993 ply.grand voyager LE. My turn signals went out and I can't locate the bus fuse on the fuse panel. The repair manuel, repair shop owner and even the parts sales person swear its on the fuse...

you need to test the multi switch the harness connection is 3/4 down the steering column under dash --as to fuse and relay if hazards still work --on same fuse so not fuse

After towing another car quite a distance with the hazard lights on, the next day the turn signal werent working. i was told to change out the signal switch on the steering wheel so i did but a new one...

OK, you've been thru the wringer. Unf, i cannot find info on where your flasher is, but there are a couple common places to check. It's usually under the dash on the driver's side. Sometimes it's plugged right into the fuse box. Other times it's clamped to the steering column or under dash. Sometimes it IS behind the glovebox--not IN the glovebox. See if you can get behind it, either pull it past it's stops or get under the dash and look behind. You may have to pull a panel off or something to see in.
I'm pretty sure they wore out your flasher and it was really bad advice to tell you to replace the signal switch in the steering column. :o(

My main wipers, aux outlet and turn signals all quit working. Fuses are good. help?

The wipers and the turn signals are all on one switch in the steering column. I have replaced a lot of them on the Grand Cherokees. It is called a multifunction switch. The aux outlet I haven't ran into issues with them. I have replaced the Body control modules on the Grands for electrical issues. That is the units that all of your fuses are under the dash. I hope this info helps out a little.

Best of luck

Pontiac 1994 grand am . turn singnals quit working but the emergency flashers all work fine. i checked the fuses and changed out the round flasher and square relay under the dash and still no turn signals

it sounds like the multi function switch quit,
the turn signal handle your using is the turn signal switch,it is called a multi function switch because it now also does more like your dimmer switch or cruise control.you need to remove three screws under the steering cover to get to it

Flasher location

I believe the hazard/flasher relay is located under/left of the dash . I think if you remove the under panel under the steering column it should be attached to the BCM bracket under the dash on the left side.

Remove the left instrument panel (IP) insulator.
Remove the steering column filler panel.
Slide the hazard and turn signal flasher to the right, releasing the tabs from the Body Control Module (BCM) bracket.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the hazard and turn signal flasher.

Hope this helps.....
