96' cavalier runs and drives great, BUT every once in a while it just shuts off! This happens both while driving and at idle. Attempted restarts result in cranking but no start-up. This has happened four or five times in the past three months, and initially I thought the problem may be a hot climate related problem( the first three times it quit, it was 90+ degree weather outside) but recently it was a very mild cool day, and bam,the damn thing quit on me again! Here is the kicker, if the car is allowed to sit over night it will start right up and run and drive normally again, which has been the extent of my efforts to try and fix. I bought the car for pennies because the mustang is not the greatest on gas, and I am not really into buying a bunch of un needed parts in an effort to maybe accidentally find the problematic part. Anybody had similar experience? or maybe recognize the symptoms and have a thought, suggestion to share? Thanks!

If none of the above satisfy the solution to your problem, there is one other possibility, unfortunately an expensive one. If your ignition system is working fine, (coils and all), you may have lost your timing chain. I have the same year cavalier, and its a 4cyl, same situation and it turns out that the timing chain broke. Have the compression checked.

Well on the old type cars it use to be the coil that would cause it not to start.so my gues and i might be wrong is one of the coils has gone out some cars have 3 coils with a v6.anyway i say it's an ignition problem.

Need to actually, physically, check spark.Pull a plug wire off the plug, insert a medium size phillips head screwdriver into the spark plug wire boot, making sure it clicks in and engages.Lay the screwdriver's metal shank about a 1/4" from a metallic ground source (not the fuel line).Have someone crank the car over while you are looking for an arc between the screwdriver and ground. No arc...no spark...cheap easy way to check for spark and eliminate or not,the ignition system.

It could very well be any of the stated problems, however ensure you take time to troubleshoot 1 problem at a time....I had a similar experience it tunred out to be my fuel system was clogged up having not changed my filter for a while and it bunred out the gas pump so it would work and stop.
If the pressure needed to open the injectors fall too low that will stall the engine so check all possibilities ok.
Further it could be one of your sensors acting up so have a diagnostic run on it ....

SOURCE: 1996 chevy cavalier

Check your battery terminals and clean them with a wire brush if they are corroded and make sure they are tight. If this doesn't work check the following: Fuel tank empty?, spark plugs incorrectly gapped if they are new, if old- maybe replace them, possibly faulty ignition coils, then maybe the crankshaft sensor is bad or timing chain is broken. I got the latter of information from the Haynes Repair Manual. Check this stuff in order. Good luck.

96 chevy cavalier 2.2 turns over but wont start have changed the following: fuel pump fuel filter map sensor crank shaft position sensor ignition module ignition coils plugs wires ran a ground from...

Tyhe first thing you shd always do on any car with starting problems is to check the spark on the plugs to localize the problem to either fuel or ignition problem. If u have an old spark plug lying around, remove one spark plug wire and attach it to the plug and lay it against the block. If it fires, when the engine turns, then it will most likely be fuel problem.
If it turns out to be fuel problem, you can prove it by using starting fluid carefully into the breather area.

Tuned up a 1993 chevy cavalier has spark won't start

Spray aerosol carb cleaner into the throttle body while an assistant tries to start the engine. If it runs for a few seconds then quits, you are not getting fuel into the engine. Check the fuses. You might have blown the fuse for the fuel injectors (possible if you removed any of the injector harnesses) or the fuel pump relay.
