Hi, I have a 96 taurus and the brakes will fail occasionally. Sometimes the brakes feel fine with good pedal pressure then the next stop they'll go all the way to the floor. The next stop they're working again. I've checked the fluid and it's full. I'm thinking its the brake booster or a vacuum leak but i'm not sure. Any ideas??
Presuming you have NO leaks in the hydraulic system,it would be a bad brake master cylinder. What's happening is,the piston inside the master cylinder has rubber seals, and when the pedal goes to the floor, the master cylinder is leaking internally, past the rubber seals. If the brake booster was bad,the symptom would be an extrememly HARD,unresponsive, brake pedal, and the engine would idle terrible (vacuum leak).Good luck.

is your brake fluid low if so top it off if that's not the problem do you have brakes if you don't have a good pedal they need bled out. you might need a new gas cap to if it doesn't seal right
Is the brake pedal getting harder to depress? Also have you had any work done on the vehicle immediately prior to this problem? If the pedal is getting harder to depress it could be a failing power brake booster if your car has one. Some ABS systems are different than others
I would suggest looking for any disconnected hoses (potential vacuum leak) and/or wires, connectors, etc..from my experience with Ford Taurus' and your description of the symptoms, this seems most likely. Good luck, and I hope this helps you out! :)
CHECK IF THE BRAKE LIGHT COME ON WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL. IF DON'T. CHECK BRAKE LIGHT FUSE. COULD BE A BRAKE SWITCH. THERE IS A shift lock solenoid that receives a signal when the key is on and the
brake pedal is depressed that allows you to move the shift lever to be
taken out of park.
Hi:
If you have replaced all pads, and see no leaks at any wheel, and have bled your brake system, then most likely your brake master cylinder has failed.
Too much gas won't make it hard to crank. To thick oil or not enough antifreeze will. If it's flooding, slowly pump the gas pedal to the floor 3 times and then with the pedal held tight against the floor, crank the engine. This will open the butterfly wide open and will blow the extra gas out.
