I have emailed the support team, if you did not rate me then some auto response did, maybe because I directed you to a Ebay auction?

He timing belt broke. mechanic says replacement wont help because the car has over 200'000 miles on it. he says we need a new engine. do you agree?

Let's see what went on in the mechanic's head...

Timing belt broke. Likely that means your engine also has bent valves, because that's what happens when the timing belt breaks while the engine is running.

At 200k miles, likely the rings are pretty worn. Does it use much oil? How was the compression before the timing belt broke? Low?

At 200k miles, I'd be thinking that once it's open, replace the bearings, too. They're likely worn out.

Yeah, sounds like a replacement engine to me, too... Cheaper than doing everything to rebuild yours.

The new timing belt jumped

no it is not. (late answer) is this a double post?

all timing belts jump,
1: every 60k miles for most. ever read the service list.
some top quality belts go bad at 100k miles. so.....????

Honda uses an "interference" engine design.
do not skip this service, or the whole engine can grenade !!!
honda quote, pasted.
However, since these engines utilize an interference design, it is highly recommended to at least inspect the timing belt at 60,000 mile (96,000 km) intervals. It is an even better idea to replace the belt at these intervals. On 1990-94 models, Honda recommends the timing belt to be replaced at 90,000 mile (144,000 km) intervals. On 1995 models, the recommended interval is 60,000 miles (96,000 km).end quote.

and if the last guy put in a POS china belt, well, you are hosed.
no name belts are junk, never ever use one,
BTW i run Gates belts.

I just want to know what to look for if your timing belt is needed to be replaced. Or will the belt just break loose. I have a Honda Accord with 96,000 miles on it. Should the belt be changed or will...

Timing belts should be changed around 100,000 miles. So if you already have it open then I would go ahead and do the change. The signs to look for is if the belt is loose, or cracked. A bright enough flashlight will show if the belt is cracked, looks I guess you can put it as dry skin.

How often does the timing belt have to be changed on a 2004 V40 1.9 4cyl?

Do it at 60,000 miles, it is cheaper than a damaged engine-Volvo had different recommendations:
All models - 1999MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner every 80,000 miles or 8 years.
1,6/1,8/2,0 - 2000-01MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
90,000 miles/8 years.
186,000 miles/16 years.
1,9T/2,0T - 2000MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
66,000 miles/6 years.
138,000 miles/12 years.
210,000 miles/18 years.
2,0T - 2001MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
90,000 miles/8 years.
186,000 miles/16 years.
All models - 2002MY : Replacement of timing belt and tensioner every 96,000 miles or 8 years.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.

At how many miles should i change my timing belt? 2002 ford escort 2.0 liter

According to the 1997-2002 Ford Escort Manual the average replacement interval is every 60,000 Miles (96,000 Kilometers). I unfortunately procrastinated and my timing belt snapped at 109,000 Miles and I had to go to the junk yard for a new engine. I had to replace a whole engine for not replacing a $15.00 belt.

1999 Tercel. Timing belt/water pump interval change?

Hello tinaromano1: The factory specification are to replace the belt every 90,000 miles in severe service. I would recommend to replace at 90,000 no matter what the service would be. Keep in mind should the belt break there is always a chance engine damage may occur. Should you need further help just ask. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

The 1993 929s with a 3.0 liter had a timing belt.I recomend that it be replaced every 80 thousand miles if not sooner. So yes its ready for one.I would say to check the tires first for the vibration.Good Luck!!!
