Our 1996 Pontiac Sunfire won't start. The key won't turn in ignition. Did earlier yesterday and then tried later and its froze! We tried different keys and none will work. We also tried putting our foot on brakes and turning steering wheel, which is locked. Any suggestions?

This same thing happed to my 98 Sunfire...I sprayed WD 40 in the ignition where the key goes in and it finally moved...must have been moisture in it.

I have a 2001 sunfire, when you put the key in the igniation it will not turn

Are you saying the key won't turn in the ignition or the engine will not turn over?

If you are talking about the ignition, the first thing I would check is to make sure I had the right key. And then I would look for my less used keys and see if that made a difference. If none of the keys make a difference, then it is your ignition switch.

If the key turns in the ignition, but the engine does not turn over, then I would check the battery first and then the starter solenoid.

How do you reset the theft system (for the car, not the radio) on a 1996 pontiac sunfire se. the battery went dead and the car has been sitting for a month now. the car will not start with the key. it will...

Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft-deterrent system.
Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent systemT. he system is armed once the keyi s removed from the ignition. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinderi s turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used, fuel is disabled.

During normal operation, the THEFT SYSTEM light will go off after the engine is started. Ln the unlikely event that the engine stalls and the THEFT SYSTEM light flashes, wait until the light stopsf lashing before trying to restart the engine. Remember to release thkee y from the START position as soon as the engine starts. If after several tries the vehicle still does not start, the vehicle may need service. At this time, you may also want to check the fuses. See your Pontiac dealer for service.

If the THEFT SYSTEM light comes on while the engine is running, a problem has been detected and the system may need service. See your dealer for service. In an emergency, call the Pontiac Roadside Assistance Program at 1 -800-ROADSIDE or 1-800-762-3743.

This ans other details can find it in this link for 1996 Pontiac Sunfire - Owners Manual.

Changed starter in 96 sunfire now, cranks but will

Try turning the key to the on position three times, then leave it on the third time and wait about fifteen minutes for the security light to stop flashing. then turn the key off and try to start it.

How to remove or bypass the factory installed anti theft vehicle immobilizer.

in the 1996 sunfire GM uses an anti theft lock system. It can be triggered by all sorts of things. In order to relinquish this you must have a key to turn the ignition. These are not coded just plain cut keys. Once you attain this you put the key in and turn the ignition to the ACC position and wait ten minutes (theft lock light will turn off), turn off and take key out. You MUST do this 3 times and then the theft lock will be disarmed.

96 pontiac sunfire wont start.....

Starter solenoid , or wire that leads to it.

Also , if standard transmission , may be the switch on clutch pedal is intermitant.

Engine won't turn over unless it thinks you have your foot on the clutch.
