MY car is a 1995 mazda mx3. It has an idle problem where after the engine is started and ran for a few minutes the RPM needle surges from abou 100 to 750 rpm's Sometimes the engine actaully stalls completely out. It appears to be some what a rhythmic surge or rough idle
Thank you for the advice, I have changed the air meter and still nothing changed. Is it possible that I have recieved a second one that is also bad? Or is it remotely possible that it could be the idle air control valve? Thanks again

i have the same trouble. the engine starts well, runs well but when it's gettin warmer, it doesn't work if it's not in a gear. if i run with 3000 rpm or more, when i push the clutch the rotations get lower and lower and stop.hello,

it sounds like a lambda sensor issue, the lambda sensor is located on the exhaust manifold, it controls the emisions, it also controls the air/fuel mixture to control the emisions, if it is faulty it could cause the engine to surge like you describe
Have it scanned for fault codes as an indicator of the problem. If the throttle valve is gummed up, cold temps can cause it to stick. But diagnose first!
This is because the oil hasn't circulated in the HLA (hydrolic lash adjusters) that is ontop of the valves/springs under the cam. Once they are full with oil, the clicking stops and they opperate properly! Try running a thicker oil, other than that it's not a big problem unless the ticking is very loud or doesn't stop after it's warm.
You should check your engine's AIR hoses that are connecting to the airbox. sometimes a simple airleak will be enough to alter your idle. Specially when its cold the car will already idle rough ( I know im canadian lol). So go check your air hoses ;)
here is what you need to do, a cleaning of the intake throttle blade and the idle speed control air-bypass valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
