Must be a seized mechanism, if it is the rear hinged type, you need to get behind the grille if you can and release the catch from underneath.

You take all the center console and plastic ducts from between the seats. There are 4 10mm bolts holding the shifter mechanism to the floor. Take these off and do your best to flip the whole housing to where you can access the bottom side. The ignition switch is attached under there. As I recall there are 2 T20 screws holding it on.

I'm afraid if you don't have the code, you will have to take it to a local dealer or specialist radio store to have it re-coded.
Fortunately, it's not expensive.
SOURCE: where is the thermostat in a 900s oh. 97 saab 900S
Oil change interval has nothing to do with operating temperature. If your coolant is full, feel the upper radiator hose, when the vehicle is up to temp. if cool , thermostat is back from that hose,
Look for air bleeds, and read owners manual, some cars have coolant bleeds. Also, heater on high when filling coolant or risk bubbles...
My thought is that your fans may not be kicking in. They should cycle on and keep temp low enough. test them.
