Worsening shudder I have a 2002 Mazda MPV with about 60K miles on it. Recently noticed an increase in shudder both when idling and accelerating. doesn't seem to be directly related to engine speed. home diagnostic tool showing codes for misfiring #4 cylinder and another for 'system too lean'. Getting to the point that the engine seems to be almost stalling. this has been going on for about 4 days now. Any tips would be very much appreciated. Mike

Do a compression test on the cylinder and compare it to a cylinder on the other side. If the compession reads lower in #4 the chances of the head gasket leaking is pretty good. What's happening is #4 cylinder may be blowing air into the cylinder next to it. You will not have any water in the oil or visa versa if this is happening.

You got it, definetely is the symptoms of a bad catalytic converter including the smell.
Fortunately there is only one
Unfortunately they are very costly
You may also notice that if the vehicle is idling for awhile and you look underneath the exhaust may be glowing red in some areas, extremely hot
Hope this helps

I have a mazda MPV 2002 with cylinders 2 and 3 misfiring. Which cylinders are these if I'm facing the engine from the front?

cylinders 2/3 are on the back side of the engine. You will have to remove the intake plenum to gain access to the plugs/coils. If you are going to go thru all of that you may want to replace all the rear coils/plugs because if the vehicle has over 60k they are going to go bad.

Mazda mpv engine idle problem

I had the same problem with my 2002 MPV. I ended up removing the IAC Idle are-control myself, and cleaning it really well (with some air intake cleaner). Put it back together, and it's been running great for the past year.

Not too difficult of a project, I'm no mechanic, but if your good with tools, it's not to bad.

REPAIR MANUAL NEEDED!!!!

The 2002, 2003 and 2004 Mazda MPV's all use the same Ford 6 cyl. 3.0 duratec engine. The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute of those years use the same engine. Therefore if you need an inexpensive engine repair manuel for your 2002 MPV, get the Haynes ($20.00) 2001-2007 Escape/Tribute manuel. Mazda sells the a MPV shop manuel for $180.00. I also own a 2002 Mazda MPV LX. 75k miles.
