The simplest way to tell if you got a thermostat problem is to take note of the temperature gauge , if you have owned the car for awhile you should know were the temperature gauge normally runs when the car is warmed up, it should be running in the same place on the gauge, if its running much lower its a good indication that you have a thermostat problem, if you have serviced the cooling system every 30,000 miles or so you should not have a bad core but it is still possible, these cars do have problems with the blend door motor or blend door its self , you can tell if this is possibly the problem if you warm up the car (this is only if the temp gauge shows its running at a normal temperature)then turn the temperature knob on the dash from the coldest point to the highest hot while holding your hand over air flow outlet you should notice a very noticeable change in temperature when moving from hot to cold if not that"s a good indication that you have a blend door or blend door motor problem.if you have a blend door or blend door motor problem problem you mite want to take it to a shop because to repair it requires complete removal of the dash assemble to gain access to the heater box, also I should tel you that if you can get to the heater hoses ( under the hood ) were they enter into the car , make note of the temperature, they should both be pretty much the same temperature, good and hot to the touch,if not its very likely you have a plugged heater core,(as long as at least one hose is good and hot) which again requires removal of the dash board to access, this should get you headed in the right direction to figure out were the problem is

The easiest way to determine whether or not your thermostat is working is someone will have to remove it. Take it into the kitchen, place it in water and turn on the burner. if the thermostat is working it will open once the water gets hot enough.
