you lost heat to the heater core (see core valve at fire wall is the lever in the open direction?)
engine not really hot, 180F is hot, less is fail, new thermostat time.
the dampers in the heater casing might be stuck , bad control cable.
see hvac section in FSM from JEEP. or
here.
alldata.com
here is the logic flow (test for this failure)
1: engine really hot, i use a pyro IR gun,
2: i move the hot cold lever. it has a cable. said cable goes
to 1 of 2 places. the Damper, or to a water valve.
if a water valve, it's clogged, or the cable bad to it (see adjustment in FSM)
if damper,.does the damper lever move min to max, yes, good
no bad cable. (or the cable fell off, or the sheath is not clamped Right)
3: Clogged heater core inside, not doing the 2 year coolant flush and fill, this is going to happen. every time. zero maintenance......
BIG JOB.
3b: clogged, core outside from say pin needles falling in to cowl
and down in to HVAC fresh air port, and packing all that up.
just fixed one yesterday like that.
BIG JOB.
Assuming the fan works ok, it sounds like the cable from hand control to heater valve has come off or needs adjusting or replacing. Or (less likely) there is a problem with the mechanical valve. The valve needs to open to allow hot water to flow through to the mini radiator (heater radiator) and then both coolant pipes and mini radiator get hot with a warm engine. Try moving the valve lever by hand (somewhere above the clutch pedal).and If you start getting heat with the fan on the fault is the cable..
The thermostat cannot cause your heater to go out, though the heater will run a little cooler if the thermostat is stuck open. Please see my tip athttp://www.fixya.com/cars/r6235876-no_heat_fan_blowing_cold_air to troubleshoot the heater. In particular, I would start by checking the temperature control cable adjustments. I have pasted instructions from autozone.com below.
If you really want to change the thermostat, please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5929960-s_thermostat . The thermostat is in the housing at the end of the upper radiator hose. For the speedo, It's probably a broken cable. Have someone take the cable off the tranny and spin the cable in their fingers while you watch the speedo. If the speedo works, the problem is with the gear in the tranny, else the cable is broke. Let me know if you have more questions along your journey. :o) Heater temperature control cables to blend door and heater water valve--adjustment: WATER VALVE CONTROL ROD
See Figure 8 When adjusting the water valve control rod, disconnect the temperature control cable at the air mix door lever and then adjust air mix door control cable. Next, adjust the control rod. Reconnect the temperature control cable and then readjust it.
Push the air mix door lever in the correct direction.
Pull the control rod in the direction shown (in the accompanying illustration) until there is an 0.08 in. (2mm) clearance between the ends of the rod and link lever. Connect the rod to the door lever.
TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE
See Figure 9
Move the temperature control lever to the cold position. Push the cable sheathing and the air mix door lever in the correct and then tighten the clamp. Verify proper operation.
check to see if the valve on the heater hose moves when heat is adjusted cold to hot. you may be able to hear coolant moving through the heater core if the valve opens. good luck. hope this helps.
Check the water control valve behind the engine close to the firewall. This valve opens and closes to allow hot coolant to enter the heater core. It is usually connected to the heater controls with a cable. When you adjust the heater control for heat, a cable activated lever on the valve should move and allow coolant to move through the valve. The cable from the heater control can come loose from the lever, or the valve itself can become corroded and hard to move.
Check the operation of the heater control valve. If it doesn't open up no heat. If the cable moves the control on the valve take the valve off and check it manually. The lever may work but the valve still doesn't open.
The heat is controled by a control valve installed in one of the heater hoses. It normally is controled by eather a vaccuum line or a cable coming from inside the truck at the dash where you slide the hot to cold adjustment.Find the valve under the hood at the hose, have someone move the control inside the truck. If its vaccuum you can pull off the hose and see if you have vac.If its a cable you should se it move.
Your not getting hot fluid to the heater core. There is valve that opens when you put heater to the hot position. This can be operated by vacuum and/or a cable. First find the valve to see if it is operating. The valve could either be in the engine compartment or under the dash. There should be a simple lever on it that moves open and closed positions. If it does not move, move it manually and check if you are getting hot air. If you getting hot air the valve is ok. Now you need to find out why the valve is not moving. Broken cable or no vacuum. If you can't move the valve manually it rusted or broke either way replace the valve.
The aerostar has a vacuum operated watervalve in the heater tubing.the valve is located on the
passenger side inner fender behind the aircleaner.with someone operating the controls inside the van
you can check to see if you get vaccum by removing the tiny hose that goes to the water valve
and checking for suction as you in the van person operates the heater conthttp://www.fixya.com/PostAnswer.aspx?thid=1323651&prdid=696348rols. If you have no
vaccum there is a break in the hose between the intake manifold and the valve. If you do get
vaccum check to see if the valve changes position from vaccum on to vaccum off. you can see
this motion on the small lever on the side of the valve. If the valve lever doesn't move you can
move it manually to allow the water to flow through the heater core. if the valve won't move manually
there is an obstruction in the valve. If it does move manually the vaccum diaphragm is gone.
replace the valve. if it moves to the manual open position you can hold it open with a tywrap.
before you get to this point you should first check to see that there is enough coolant in the
radiator. If you still have no heat you can check the coolant flow through the heater core. to do
this remove both heater hoses from the valve and pump water from a hose into one of the hoses
water should flow from the other hose. If it doesn't the heater core is blocked. The rear heater
operates the same way with the watervalve under the van just behind the drivers seat.
Good luck.
