I have a 99 hilux with a new 3.0L diesel 5L engine in it, but everytime I switch on the air con, the engine cuts out, driving, idling, reving. Obviously its shorting out somewhere, but how can I fix this? Thanks.

Disconnect the vacuum hose off the ISC (idle speed control) valve and try the AC again and if it works check your wires if you have a damaged/broken connector wire. If you observe the choke plate lever when you switch on the AC you'll realise that the choke plate is closing off the air passage and stalling the engine.

Hi, thanks for this answer, I have exactly the same problem with my Hilux 5L. When I switch on the aircon the revs drop and it almost stalls. The problem only became apparent when I replaced the rubber hose between the diaphragm and the solenoid switch, the old hose was cracked and drawing air. Do you have any suggestions at to where the faulty connector might be? I tested those at the aircon compressor and the solenoid and they seem to be ok.

Check Air Intake/ clean or replace air filter. Also, plugs could need replacement. Noisy or rough idle could be plugs not firing properly after the engine has warmed up, but I would check the air filter first. I hope this helps.

More info is needed like is it cold there, where your at, how was it running before now, has it been happening, loss of power check engine light could mean a lot of things, even bad fuel water in fuel plugged exhaust, can you accelerate while in park?

the FSM book covers this.
same as all cars.?
drain coolant
remove all belts and pulleys blocking access to IT.
un bolt, it, im not doing reverse order, sorry

which engine the 3L or 5L or the 5L-e engine,,
the fsm is the factory service manual, sold at toyota, get one.,
may take an engine actual supplement.

if the engine light came on its because the pcm see a problem and go to limp mode you need to use a scaner to ck for code and see what you need to repair the problem

It is normal for the idle to increase when the air con is switched on. There is a fuse in the engine compartment - I-UP (idle up)

Sounds like you have a leaking head gasket maybe. Does the smoke have a sweet smell to it? If not it is oil or fuel.

3lt diesel hilux 2002 (5L-E engine, non turbo). when i slow down the oil light comes on and the gear shift shakes like the vehcile is about to stall. doesnt happen every time, maybe 1 out of every 5 times...

85% of the diesel engine problem is the fuel system. and rest 15%, if met, is a major problem. you have to check the filter. and make the fuel line solid. means no air in the system.

Check calibration. Muffler supports from the front till the back, there should be proper clearance. Is your diesel fuel of proper cetane rating for the engine? Check your belt drive system, is there any part that is excessively draining engine power, power steering pump, air con compressor, alternator or generator? Do these preliminary steps and isolate.
