I have a 98 chevy venture and it sounds like it is knocking on the drivers side under the hood. But the knock stops as soon as you hit 50. Before you hit 50 it get louder. Can you tell me what it is?

Does it make this sound at idle, or only under power?

If you remember the sound your peddle bike use to make when you would put cards in your bikes back tire that's what it kind of sounds like. The faster you go the faster the sound.

If it is a little tapping then it is a lifter that is trying to leak down overnight , as you were suspecting, the only way to fix it is to replace them but they are roller lifters and are expensive to replace, you can try some Lucas oil additive on the next oil change, put a quality 10w40 oil and 1 whole quart of Lucas engine oil additive and if it is caused by varnish build up the lucas will solve the issue, if is a worn seal it will help it, but it has collapsed internally ,nothing will help it but a new lifter. But it is worth a try sinc ethe Lucas is less than $8.00 a bottle, just remember that this stuff is very thick , so the engine needs to be warm and running when it is added to correctly blend with the oil ,and do its job correctly. do not add the Lucas without draining out a quart as it will overfill the engine oil

I got an infinity 2005 g 35. I'm starting to hear a knocking noise. I don't know if its the engine, It sounds like it's coming from the side somewhere but definitely under the Hood.? Idk

if the knock speeds up with rpm increase then it definitely is the engine. if it is a solid sounding knock that would be bottom end. if it is more of a hollow knock or more like a tick then could be top end...lifters, exhaust leak or check to see if anything is hitting your cooling fan.

Heard a grinding sound under hood. Car then died.

So does the a/c still work, maybe your compressor is bad? Top off your oil and run the engine and see if you can find out where the oil came from?

it could be either, main bearings or rod bearings, you seem to have a handle on it,now all we can do is take bets when the big knock happens!
