My 2000 Toyota Avalon does not like to stay started in cold weather. I recall this happening with a previous 2000 Avalon that I owned. I was told by a tow truck driver, that all I needed to do is keep my foot on the accelerator for about 5 minutes to warm it up and it will be fine. This seems to work. As I recall, I had to have the Idle Air Control Valve replaced or cleaned or something, and then everything was fine. Is this a difficult repair?

This is the downfall of a new toyota congrads you can relate to me i Own a 2008 Scion tC these new toyota's are driven by what is called "Drive By Wire Throttle system" there will always be a delay in the throttle response espcially in newer toyota's with an automatic transmission hence the newer ones have a 5 speed automatic transmission instead of the 4 speed automatics kind of a poor design on there end with the Drive By Wire. Sorry this is a problem that happens to be a design flaw on toyota's and some people notice it more than others.

Have the plastic intake manifold and gasket replaced. I have posted this fixed at least once before and have seen it numerous times.

Avalons are prone to the the throttle body and Idle control valve getting gunked up over time. I took mine off, spent about 45 minutes cleaning it well with carb cleaner and q tips, and reinstalled. I haven't had the problem since. It is relatively easy, the hard part is not stripping the screws. Everthing is righ on top of the engine, not a hard repair. Mine did not have the smoke issue, however, it would start but would die as soon as you let off the gas.

You're Iac is sticking because of carbon build up. The usual fix is a new one.
