I have a 2000 Espace and for years it has suffered from a non-start problem. It can be fine for ages and then, suddenly, there's nothing when you turn the ignition, not even a click. All instruments light up. It's not the battery. Does this sound familiar?

In my case, time and time again it has been what they call the 'firewire' connection on to the starter - the connection becomes corroded over time and fails to pass sufficient voltage.

If the terminal becomes too badly burned, where the voltage has arced because of a poor connection, apparently the only solution is to fit a new starter motor. But so far, in my case, it's just needed a clean of the connector and terminal.

By the way, holding the ignition key in the ON position for some time (30 seconds or more) can sometimes cause it to fire up.

The Renault Espace range of diesel vehicles can be a real PITA as the fuel line often becomes defective and permits air to get sucked into the fuel. (The problem IMHO is the large number of quick release fuel line couplings that have rubber "O" rings which shrink) For a while the car will start if a second battery and jump leads are used but the starter is not rated for being worked so hard. Eventually it gets lazy and no amount of batteries, jump leads or boosters will start the car. On the Espace MK3 it is possible to replace the entire "go" (delivery) hose with 10 mm bore SAE approved fuel hose. If this is done one will get "solid" (not aerated) diesel fuel up to the fuel filter. There are still more of those infernal couplings after the fuel filter but the fuel system can handle a microscopic amount of air so usually these couplings can be left alone. By the time that the vehicle gets to this stage the starter will usually be unserviceable so it will have to be replaced. On no account fit a new motor if noticeable amounts of air are still getting into the fuel as the new motor will soon be destroyed. The most desirable motor (there are about nine makes and types) is the heavy duty Bosch but the price will empty most wallets. The proper battery is the 096 which has 680 Cold Cranking Amperes. Such a battery should start the engine easily if everything else is in good condition. Above all having NO AIR IN THE FUEL is very important and IMHO this is the number one reason why Renault Espaces end up in scrap-yards. Good luck!

Check first that the battery is charging up properly, it could just be the battery not holding enough charge to start or the alternator not charging battery properly. Test the car with a replacement battery.
If it is not a battery problem it is likely to be the ignition lock barrel (faulty magnet) in need for replacement, rather than a lose connection to the ignition barrel. If this is the key you will need to replace the ignition barrel.

Have 2.2dci renault espace 2001 engine turns over but wont start

If your stock engine ground strap is missing, you can install a nice big braided one between any good heavy engine bolt and the frame. As to no start, check fuel pressure with gauge, check for spark at plugs and ask again with this new info.
