It can probably be saved, but its going to be expensive. You have probably ruined the fuel pump and injectors, among other things. The fuel system would need to be removed and an attempt made to clean it out, including the gas tank. It could be over a thousand dollars to repair in the US.
You must remove the gas tank and flush it out with clean water then with denatured alcohol and then let it dry. You will also need to replace the fuel filter and purge the fuel lines.
This is a Saturn ion i do not think there is and i would not even start this car if you even think there may be sugar in the tank,Water can cause a little damage but not really as long as there is gas mixed but still do not run engine. sugar is bad!!. this will cause lots of damage. converter, injectors and cylinder wall damage. You will need to drop tank and drain it out and then flush it out good. then drain fuel lines and replace the fuel filter. after you are done i would put in a bottle of dry gas and a fuel injector cleaner additive in the tank. Note ' make sure to flush tank good, When fuel lines are removed the fuel in lines should drain back out of lines. the only problem is what is in the fuel rail and injectors, this is why i said to add injector cleaner and dry gas additive to help if there is any small amount of water left in tank. hope this helps ,good luck.
was the fuel filter changed. and you should also check plugs and wires.for a missfire problem. if you dont get proper spark to plugs, it will misfire and be sluggish. have a good day !!
TO REMOVE FUEL TANK YOU FIRST RELIEF FUEL PRESSURE.THEN YOU RAISE THE VECHICLE AND SUPPORT ON JACK STANDS.THEN YOU DRAIN FUEL OUT OF FUEL TANK.YOU CAN GO TO ANY AUTO PARTS STORE BUY A SIPHON.DONT SIPHON GASOLINE WITH YOUR MOUTH.SWALLOWING GAS AND FUMES COULD BE FATAL.WHEN ALL FUEL OUT THE FUEL TANK.REMOVE THE FUEL FILLER.DISCONNECT THE ELECTRICAL WIRING TO FUEL TANK.THEN DISCONNECT ALL THE HOSES FROM THE FUEL TANK.PLACE A LARGE FLOOR JACK CENTER OF THE FUEL TANK.PLACE A PIECE PLY WOOD OVER FLOOR JACK LIFTING SADDLE TO KEEP FROM PUTTING A HOLE IN FUEL TANK.START RAISING FLOOR JACK UNTIL SADDLE TOUCH GAS TANK JUST ENOUGH TO HOLD TANK IN PLACE.THEN YOU REMOVE FUEL PUMP SUPPORT STRAP BOLTS DROP FUEL TANK DISCONNECT FUEL SUPPLY AND RETURN HOSES AND DISCONNECT FUEL VAPOR LINES FROM PRESSURE RELIEF ROLLOVER VALVE.THEN REMOVE TANK.IF HAVE TROUBLE REMOVING FILLER TUBE AT GAS TANK SPRAY WD40 AROUND WHERE FILLER TUBE GOES TO GAS TANK LOOSEN THE CLAMPS AND USE LARGE VISE GRIPS WORK FILLER TUBE HOSE AWAY FROM FUEL TANK SPRAY WD40 INTO IT SLIDE ON OFF.WHEN YOU GET FUEL TANK OFF USE A FUEL PUMP MODULE LOCK RING TOOL TURN LOCK RING COUNTERCLOCK WISE.IF YOU DONT HAVE THE FUEL PUMP LOCK RING TOOL.YOU CAN USE A HAMMER AND BRASS DRIFT OR A PLASTIC DRIFT DONT USE NO METAL DRIFTS OR PUNCH YOU WILL MAKE A SPARK AND HAVE EXPLOSION FROM GAS FUMES BE EXTRA CAREFUL.REPLACE FUEL PUMP SOCK AND FUEL SUPPLY LINES IF STOPPED UP AND REPLACE FUEL FILTER.PUT EVERY THING BACK IN VISA VERSA.IF ALL GOES WELL. GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE BUY A GAS CAP WITH A LOCK SO WHO EVER PUT SUGAR IN YOUR GAS WONT BE ABLE TO TRY IT AGAIN GOOD LUCK.
if it still starts then your ok.remove gas tank and dump fuel.clean out any sugar on bottom of tank.go throuh the fuel pump hole. use a water hose if needed then let it dry.fill up tank and just run it it will be ok. what sugar does to an engine [and never mind myth busters, they are wrong] ive seen it 4 times, someone in town was having fun with sugar in the tank.anyways with enough sugar in gas tank the sugar disolves in the fuel.then engine, especially the valve stems get hot and sugar becomes a molten goo on the parts, valves, pistons, cylinders, fuel injectors.only the hot parts seem to be effected. then when you turn the engine off the sugar cools and becomes hard like a piece of hard candie.the valve stems are now locked into valve guides and cannot open or close,it takes alot more driving to damage pistons and rings only a little sugar is injected on every intake stroke and its aimed right at the valve stem.one mile of driving i dought will cause problems. beware that if the sugar was poured it dry you will need to flush out the filler neck.if it was dry then very little got in the tank anyway, unless you put gas in it after sugar was added
first turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump to come on for 15 sec.this is to prime the system before you crank the engine.no sound, with only a rubber mallet( no metal hammers )hit the bottom of the gas tank,no fuel pump operating go to the fuel pump relay and remove then test for (2) 12 volt power supplies with key on,if ok check ground at relay if okay remove gas from tank and drop gas tank to check for voltage at pump.replace pump if 12 volts is present.
call a auto parts store and see if they have something you can flush the tank with also try this website www.autozone.com beside dropping the gas tank.
