I need to replace the starter in a 1993 Mercury Villager van GS model with the six cylinder engine

  • Anonymous Dec 24, 2010

I was going to tell you the starter don't work at all. It has been giving us problems. A couple days ago the Bendix drive was stuck and just ran for about 45 seconds before I turned the key again and it engaged with the flywheel. I had the transmission replaced a month or two ago and the mechanic said they where having problems with it at that time but since they where so over budget the took the starter apart and cleaned out the brushes and I will bet just cobbled the thing together. Any thoughts would be appreciated

I was kind of hoping for more details about what to remove up top to gain access to the thing but I will figure it out. Heck what do you expect for ten bucks anyway....Thanks :)

Okay drive the van on ramps chalk rear wheels disconnect battery Under the van beside the oil pan you will see the starter motor disconnect the positive terminal and the two bolts that bolt it on the the engine lower it down by hand. Now reconnect positive terminal to the starter and any others present replace the retaining bolts tighten them .Now go up top reconnect battery and test start the van you should be good to drive now.

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only
genuine items as replacement as non-genuine are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units. This results in the fault codes not cancelling out. Check ambient temp sensor

How many freeze plugs have a mercury villager?

How many cylinders does it have? What size is the engine? Is your Villager equipped with a Ford engine or a Nissan engine? (Villager used both) Are you counting the freeze plugs in the cylinder heads, or just the ones in the engine block? Most of them have 8 or 10 total.....

So, why do you ask?

Is it the starter

most likely is the alternator.
jump start the car and pull off one of the cable for the battery terminal. if the car stop. then it is the alternator. if not then you have to check the regulator. it should out put 12-14v.
the battery is not being charged.
