I take it that the 4X4 light does not come on, either. The problem is probably in the shift motor itself. The contact plates inside the shift motor, get dirty or corroded and the motor doesn't get enough current to move. The 4X4 light simply indicates that the transfer case is/is not engaged, but it tells you absolutely nothing about whether or not the circuitry is trying to engage. Simple fix is to replace the shift motor. Inexpensive fix (although temporary) is to remove the shift motor, open it up and clean off the contact plates and contacts themselves. Not too complicated, but a lot of folks get intimidated by opening up electric motors. But, hey, if you can't get it put back together, you probably needed to replace it anyhow. Good luck.

My 4WD won,t engage. I checked the fuses and electrical connections. What should I check now?

If you have the push button 4x4 it will have a electric motor on the side of the transfer case. Have someone push on the button while you tap on the motor with a screwdriver handle. If the 4x4 engages it means your motor is getting weak and will need replaced or rebuilt.

97 gmc sierra won't go into 4x4. Electronic

Take the front axle actuator out of the axle. Plug it back in and have some one push the 4x4 button. The actuator should move, it's a liniar motor. If it doesn't then the actuator is bad or there is a wiring problem. If it does there is a problem in your front diff or some where else in the system.
I'd take a guess and say it's the front actuator.

97 JIMMY,PUSH 4X4 BUTTON,NOTHING HAPPENS

Hi,
When you switch it from 2H to 4H you can push the switch at any speed but if you switch to 4L the car must be stop and the shifter is in neutral position.
Anyway here is my suggestion.... I would check the switch it self 1st for proper contact, also check the owners manual if there is a fuse for 4X4.
The worse scenario is the 4X4 computer is dead and if you have problem with transfer case you would notice a whining noise.

1996 Yukon 4X4 Electronic Shift on Fly.

I had the same problem with the shift on the fly push-button 4x4 on my 97 Suburban. GM Shop manual indicates that it could be due to an encoder error on the actuator motor. Try pulling the transfer case fuse to reset the transfer case control module. Wait at least one minute. Re-install fuse then re-try operation. Did it last week and that saved me a trip to the dealership and extensive troubleshooting.
