Check the fuel pump for voltage. If there is no voltage, it could be the pump relay. Swap another relay of the same type with the fuel pump relay. If that doesn't work, then the pump itself is probably bad. If the fuel pump is getting voltage, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator are the next things to check. Usually a dirty filter won't completely restrict the flow of fuel. You can check to see if fuel is reaching the pressure regulator by disconnecting the inlet fuel line and cranking the engine.

Nobody has messed around with the ignition timing in any way?

If it has stood for a long time(i.e years..) the fuel may have degraded to the point that it\'s useless.

The carbs will smell of fuel, but are you sure that fuel is being pumped to them in sufficient quantity? Try disconnecting a fuel line, crank the engine a few revolutions to see if fuel is pumped out.

Try gravity feeding the carbs. Use a can of fuel connected to the carbs, held above the engine. Get somebody to crank the engine and see if it fires up. If the engine fires up, suspect the fuel pump.. or fuel lines.

An air leak can also cause non-starting. The usual cause is the inlet manifold gasket. Any air leaking through the gasket can cause your non-starting problem. Go back and check that no dirt has been picked up by the gasket before you fitted it/it hasn\'t been ripped. Check that the inlet manifold has been correctly tightened.

It doesn\'t sound as though you have much of a problem .. more of a \'niggle\'.

Car won't crank check for fuel and no fuel put gas in and check the fuses everything seams good check for power going to the fuel pump with the switch on and there is no power to the fuel pump. We

Fuel pump will only have power for 2 seconds unless engine is cranking or running. Most common cause for ur problem is a broken dowel pin in the cam gear causing the timing to be out just enough to shut itdown

Motor turns over but will not start, seems to be getting gas, & spark

I don't have enough info to give you a specific answer so I've listed a bunch of possible problem that could cause your engine to roll over but not start.
Check the battery and connections, a weak battery or bad connections can cause a weak spark and stop the engine from firing.
Fuel pump or fuel filter, low gas pressure can cause to lean of a air/fuel mixture for the engine to start.
Bad gas, old gas or water in the gas can stop the engine from firing.
Bad or fouled spark plugs, could be caused by bad gas.
Ignition wiring problems, can cause weak or unreliable spark.
Bad, poorly connected or misconnected spark plug wires. Even 2 wire out of order can stop the engine from firing.
Oily spark plug wires, can cause the spark to fire at the wrong cylinder or misfire.
Worn, damaged or wet ignition components.

The car ran out of gas and I had to put 5 gallons in it to get it start yesterday then today it has between emety and and quarter tank and would not fire... I can hear the pump run and so I put 3 more...

WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF GAS IT WILL CAUSE FUEL PUMP DAMAGE CAUSING IT TO OVERHEAT.CHECK FUEL PRESSURE IT SHOULD BE 41 - 47 PSI. IF NOT REPLACE FUEL FILTER.IF FUEL PRESSURE STILL LOW OR 0 . FUEL PUMP BAD.

I have a 96 grand am gt, it has the 3.1 in it. car will crank over just fine but wont fire unless i hold the gas pedal down. once it fires up and i let go of the key the engine dies immediately. it seems...

theres a couple things it could be 1. you could have low fuel line pressure which means fuel pump could be bad or a ground wire that runs to your fuel pump or your fuel pump regulator could be bad

1977 f250 just quit running. It turns over but won''t fire. It sounds like it is not getting gas or fire. What could be the cause?

Module in the distributors are known to go bad. If you are getting fuel, this is the cause. If you are not getting fuel, check for plugged fuel filter or fuel pump inop.

Running rich after warm up.

These vans are now very old, and the gas lines need to be replaced!!! I can't warn you enough, if you smell gas, change the lines. There have been many vanagon fires due to fuel line failure. Replacment kits can be found on-line, it isn't hard to do. The other issues can be related to the fuel tank itself, the seals on top go bad and need to be replace. You know if you have this problem when you fill it to the top and gas leaks.

But, if you haven't changed your fuel lines... do it right away.

Also, go to vanagon.com and look up fuel line and fire... you will see lots of posts!

I've owned my 84 Westy since 87 and changed the lines 5 years ago, many were cracked and leaking. I count my blessings that I didn't have a fire.
