Where is the speed senser on the 96 ford taurus transaxle

You drove a transaxle, knowing it wasn't working correctly

That & not changing the fluid every 3 years-- is a death sentence

50% asian transaxle dodge caravans & 50% ford taurus -- was most of my work, at times through out the year

If this is a digial gauge check fuses first. speed senser at the back of transmission 1 10 m bolt. auto zone maybe able to check the part. Stop by Auto Zone have them run free code test. code will for senser. If manual check cable on back drivers side of transmission.

Don't you have a speed sensor on the transaxle?

It should be about the only item sticking up on top,
you can see with wires going to it.

Don't remember any cable

First speed erratic; a simple scan of the OBD2 computer will output any issues you may be having. With that you can tell if it is the sensor, the ****** or something else. Without any further information it could be any number of things.

The speedometer on a Ford Taurus is controlled by a sensor in the transmission. The most likely causes of it not working is the failure of the sensor or the sensor coming unplugged. In either case it is an easy fix. Have your mechanic check whether the sensor has failed or come unplugged. good-day ! Check your fuses also,

i had that problem with mine,,, it was the speed control senser on the transaxle......$22.00 at the auto parts store.

The AXOD-E was renamed AX4S in 1993. In addition to the name change, improvements in the lubrication of the gearset and capacity upgrades were made. A centrifugal piston assembly was implemented in the intermediate clutch position to improve 1st-2nd and 2nd-1st shift quality and an increase in the clutch's durability was made on some models. High energy friction materials were also introduced. A new twin piston torque converter clutch (TCC) was introduced with the AX4S and the AX4N on some models. The transaxle pan on this model will sometimes read "AXOD Metric" since it's based on the AXOD transaxle. The data plate code for this transmission is "L."

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) is:

• a Hall-effect pickup that sends a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650).
• able to provide the VSS signal which tells the powertrain control module vehicle speed.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (Except SHO) Removal and Installation

1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) and positive battery cable.
   

1. Raise and suitably support vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02 .
   

1. Remove three bolts, seven nuts and Y-pipe assembly from vehicle.
   

1. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
   

1. Remove vehicle speed sensor retaining bolt and vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) from transaxle.
   

1. To install, reverse Removal procedure. Tighten VSS retaining bolt to 3.4-4.5 Nm (31-39 lb-in). Tighten Y-pipe assembly nuts and bolts to 34-46 Nm (26-34 lb-ft).
