The yellow light that looks like a picture of an engine is commonly called the "Check Engine" light. It is also called the "Malfunction Indicator Light" (MIL)

The engine and transmission control computers monitor several circuits and systems critical to the proper operation of your engine and trasmission. When there is a problem one of these circuits or systems, the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) turns the light on to let you know that there is a problem. It will also store a "Fault Code" in memory. To find out what the problem is, a service technician must first scan the ECM or PCM to retrieve the fault codes in order to diagnose and repair the problem.

A little information about fault codes: Contrary to popular belief, fault codes do not tell a mechanic what parts to replace. (There are many so-called mechanics that can't seem to grasp this) Fault codes only indicate which circuit or monitored system has a problem. The mechanic that works on your car must check out the problem circuit or system to see what is actually causing the problem.

Ok so I just bought a 2007 pontiac Grand Prix and this yellow check engine type light is on that has an exclamation point over it. What does this mean?

This light comes on to alert you to the fact that a fault has occurred in the engine control electronics. You must have the computer scanned to read the code that was stored in the memory when the light came on.

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. the other day my check engine light came on. I took it to O REILEYS this afternoon and hooked up the computer to the car and what came up was something like COOLANT...

IF CAR TEMP GAUGE IS GOING ABOVE 200 DEGREES, CHANGE THEMOSTAT IMMEDIATELY BEFORE YOU DO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. IF THE TEMP STAYS AT 195 DEGREES, THE THERMOSTAT IS STUCK OPEN AND THE ENGINE WILL TAKE LONGER TO WARM UP. IT IS AN EASY FIX IF YOU ARE MECHANICALLY INCLINED. BUY NEW THEMOSTAT- ABOUT 10 -15 DOLLARS - AND CHANGE. HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 04 GRAND PRIX.

HELP!! Having electrical issues with my 2005 Pontiac

electical is hard to diagnose with out being there. i would treat each problem seperately. first you will need to test the engine temp gauge sending unit. in a dealership this is easy with a scanner they can run a sweep test to se if the gauges are responding.you don't want the engine to over heat if the gauge is not working. next problem the dome light should be easy to fixe does the dome light work with the dome switch?remove the bulb and with the doors open and switch on check for voltage, if voltage check connection and or replace bulb. if no voltage check fuses for voltage.last will need to have the dtc po243 checked out by a repair shop. i hope this will help.

The SE and LE indicate opinions on the cars. Most of the parts will interchange. When doing engine changes, the best way is to swap the ECM also.
