head gasget you must use one for the car maker as such high heat and pressures involved sealing cyliders and the head. it would be a good thing to check the head and block is not damaged eg not flat or cracked best of luck to you.
Hi
If you haven't ever done one then i suggest take to a garage.
You need to take the engine head off.
Timing belt off.
Radiator flashed / change
all water hoses off and cleaned.
head pressure tested
head skimmed.
Oil flush
New oil and oil filter.
Its not a simple job. whilst everything is open. change the timing belt and water pump as well.
The coolant getting into the oil? Maybe a head gasket. If a head gasket is done it would be a good idea to have the head checked out for cracks and surface
Unfortunately there's no way to tell until you pull the head off. if the gasket has failed you'll nee to get the head checked for cracks and flatness anyway (and possibly skimmed flat) and if the head comes off you have to replace the gasket anyway.
With overheating, the most likely situation is that the head has warped slightly causing the gasket to fail. If so, the head gets skimmed flat before fitting a new gasket. Note that on many modern engines it's vital to use new head bolts upon reassembly; your Oldsmobile dealer can tell you if this applies to your model.
drain the fluid just as you would change the engine oil. Go ahead and change the filter at the same time-you will have to remove the tranny drain pan. You can get the filter and fluid from Auto Zone and they can advise what fluid and how much. Filter should come with new gasket.
valve seals will not cause this kind of oil consumption, a scocred cylinder wall or broken piston ring will, not sure on the head gasket, does it have a combustion gases present in the radiator surge tank or bubbles while running? if not the head gasket is probaly ok.
