I have a 1992 Buick Century that stalls. It doesn't stall when I start it up or make it down the road but when it hits a hot point (Takes some Bay Area stop and go traffic or stopping and waiting at too many lights) It gives up on me. It will stall and it is hard to get back going again. If I let it sit for a couple mins I can get it working fine again. It doesn't appear hot. I have all my fluids in it the systems seem to working fine. There is no smoke no studdering just dies. I recently got it smogged and they ran it hot on idol for a long time and it didn't stall on them. I recently took it to my mechanic and he ran it for a long time on idol not going anywhere and it didn't stall on him. So I took it out and drove it around and made it stall in front of him. Mainly to show that it wasn't me being crazy. We noticed then it wasn't getting a spark. So I went out and replaced the ignition module thinking it was that. Today I took it 25 miles to work no problem but then coming home I hit a rough patch of traffic and again with the stalling and the waiting for it to work again. After it stalls it kicks and bumps and doesn't want to work but when it dies... it just dies no warning but it is predictable. I can keep it running if I keep the gas going on neutral at lights but when I switch it to drive it is complicated not to peel out like some crazy person. Next step is fuel pump replacement... do you think it could be that?

Unfortunately, you've got serious problems. The GM 3.1 and 3.4 engines have a nasty habit of breaking camshafts. For some reason, which I have yet to determine, the cam bearings seize on the cam and the camshaft ends up breaking in half. The engine will continue to run, albeit very poorly since all the cylinders are not working because the rear half of the camshaft, which runs the oil pump, is not spinning.

you might want to chk. the crank sensor and or cam sensor. sounds more to me that it could be fuel problem. chk. fuel pressure. pump could be on its way out. don't be fooled by hearing the pump running as they sound like they are pumping but there not, at least not enought pressure to keep it running. pressure should be around 50 p.s.i.

SOURCE: 1990 Buick Century 3.3L Check Engine Light comes on, stalls.

Need to check for fault codes. Possibly a faulty sensor causing the fuel system to run rich or lean.

First thing, is your chk. engine light on? if it is, you can chk. the codes yourself, get a paper clip unfold it so you got 2 strate ends, find your dianostics port where you plug in the sccanner, take the paper clip and stick one end into the one on the far right and the other to the one next to it and turn ignition key to on position, chk. engine should start blinking if not move the last end of paper clip you pluged in to next one in port until it does( turning key off each time before you move paper clip end) do this procedure until the light starts to blink. When it blinks count the blinks, for example it will blink one time than a paus than blink twice quick witch means 12 and so on. It will start out with a 12 witch means the computer is ready to give stored codes. Just write down the codes and either take them to napa, or auto zone, or to a shop you know, and they can tell you what they mean. On a car that old it could be almost anything, parts wear out, but right now what stands out to me by your discription i would chk. the cadalitic converter it might be pluged. Take some advise get someone that knows something about cars or at least works on them on a regulator bases. That way your not playing a gessing game.

My 1988 buick century stall,s after driving. engine warm,s up.won,t start right after stalling.start,s after sitting 10 or 15 minutes

Possibly an ignition module or crank sensor problem. These are the two most common stalling electronics that will cause a stall when they get warm/hot and will then continue to operate once cooled down

Engine stalls after running an

Sounds like a bad ignition coil there partner. Typically they will work and get hot and begin to fail. Get the OHM specs for the ignition coil and test it but I'm gonna say the coil is failing.

Sometimes my 2001 Buick century stalls when first starting it. It does not accelerate good while going up most hills. I just had the fuel filter replaced. It has been running kind of hot also.

First - when was last "healthy" tune up? Plugs, wires, all fluids and filters? I would start there, it would give you a good ground zero starting point if problem continues.

96 Buick Century stalls....

I spent endless time on this same problem on my 1992 Wagon. I changed out the computer but no help. It turned out to be the top dead center crank sensor that tells the system when the crank passes TDC. It is a small magnet essentially about the siz of a pencil eraser in the flywheel. it was cracked and occasionally would not "sense" and the car would just quit. troubleshooting was a nightmare because the computer diagnostics on the 1992 are less capable than the 1996 model. Anyway that is a relatively inexpensive fix and easy to know if it worked. Let me know how you solve this.
