35,000 miles on vehicle. Last major maintenance

35,000 miles on vehicle. Last major maintenance was at 29,000 at which time the dealers mechanics performed the suggested manufacturer's 30,000 maintenace. Other than oil changes what is the next maintenace that I need to be aware of and when should it be performed? Vehicle is at the dealership now for oil change, tire rotation and a bad thermostat. Car was running fine but check engine light came on and stayed on. I was told it was a bad thermostat. Sound normal to you?

Required maintenance and intervals are/ is listed in your owners manual.... thermostats are fairly reliable items but can and do fail. If yours failed you would have been either overheating or would have much lower than normal engine temp. When a t stat fails, it is always good practice to check everything over for leaks as many times something else caused the stat to fail, or that the sending unit has gone bad and there is nothing wrong with the thermostat at all.

Ok if the termostat stay open at all times . good the car dont over heat . but if stay closed then the car over heat ...... but an open termostat keep the engine too cold and the ecu turn on the service soon light .....a full tune up is spark plugs oil oil filter air filter and the most important thing on after 2000 cars the fuel filter if the car run lean can burn the catalyctic convertor and o2 sensors thats expensive beter prevent that and of course put good gas .good luck

I am looking a purchase a 2nd car for minor transportation, it would be a 2004 Volvo S60-it has only 35,000 miles on it-is it time to change the timing belt?

The belt will deteriorate over time whether driven or not. I would replace it with the best quality belt you can buy just for piece of mind. Minor expense to insure against major repairs.

At what milage(kilometres) does one need to change the timing belt/chain?

It depends on the vehicle, and the climate.
But a timing belt is expected to last for 60,000 miles and a timing chain should last the life of the engine, say 175,000 miles.
Some timing belt engines are interference engines, which means the valves can be damaged if the belt breaks while the engine is running. I recommend replacing the timing belt before 80,000 miles unless the vehicle runs in a hot climate.

NEEDS MAINTENANCE light on at 46,666 miles

The light comes on at fairly short intervals ... even to let you know that you need an oil change. The mileage at which it comes on will depend on when it was reset last time. Here's a link to Yahoo Answers to turn the light off yourself.

The maintenance requierd turns red what do I do?

This is just a reminder, which changes color when a set amount of mileage is put on the car since the last time it was reset (7.5k miles). To reset, just insert the key into the slot in the dash. It will reset to 'green' color. On '92 Accords, the slot is below the tachometer, near the indicator, 93's should be similar. If you have any other questions about this, or you need me to clarify something, please just ask.

Should a 2005 Taurus with 100,000 miles have the water pump replaced as preventative maintenance? What about the timing chain/belt?

Yes it needs to be replaced its already time for that.
IntervalsHere is what I recommend for maintenance intervals. There are exceptions to all of these including severe duty, which most northern cars fall into.

  • Change Transmission filter-30,000 miles, 90,000 and 150,000 miles and fluid at 60,000, 120,000 and 180,000 miles.
  • Change oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months, unless you use Mobil One, in which case 6 months/6,000 miles.
  • Chassis lube every 3,000 miles, assuming there are fittings.
  • Spark plugs: Conventional plugs: 30,000 miles, Double platinum: every 50,000 miles (100,000 mile plugs are best to be changed well before that, although some can reach it).
  • Fuel filter: 35,000-40,000 miles. Unless it is in the tank. But if the tank is ever dropped, do it then
  • Ignition cap, rotor, wires: 60,000-80,000 miles. (if it has them).
  • Timing Belt, if applicible: 60,000 miles on many but check with gates or dayco or the manual or dealer, as many different intervals are now present.
  • Coolant flush -- green: 2 years/24,000 miles.
  • Coolant flush -- dex-cool or long life: 5 years/50,000 miles.
  • Tire rotation: 5,000-8,000 miles.
  • Alignment: 15,000-20,000 miles., unless tire wear is not a problem and car goes straight.
  • Brake fluid flush and power steering fluid flush: 2 years or when dirty or discolored.
  • Air filter, pcv valve and cabin air filter: as needed.
  • Professional fuel injection service: 40,000 miles.
  • Throttle bore plate cleaning: 20,000 miles.
  • Air induction service: 20,000 miles.
MaintenanceEvery auto manufacturer lists their required maintenance on their web sites and in the owners manual the maintenance service intervals vary between manufacturers.

Your car is a moving piece of machinery, it needs maintenance, if you want this car to last you need to service it. Do not just do the minimum recommended services that are listed in you service manual. Make sure you service your cooling system which prolongs the life of the radiator and water pump, and the power steering system, which will extend the life of your cars power-seeking pump and gear box or rack. It will cost you much more than you want to spend when you fail to maintain your car and larger problems surface. I recommend that you review your owners manual and get acquainted with a reputable auto repair facility. A good relationship with you car and your car's mechanic will benefit you in the long run, providing you with a long lasting and safe car.

At 30,000 miles you should also service your cooling system, transmission, fuel system and power steering; this should be repeated every 30k miles. I recommend flushes of the later mentioned items to prolong these systems' life span.

Schedule maintenance

oil and air filter every 3 mo or 3000 miles which ever comes first the timing belt needs to be checked really soon and you might consider taking it to the dealer for a transmission flush filter and fill. the dealer can set you up with the best intervals to do the major maintenance.

Please confirm this statement....only if you really know!!!!

That may be true, but you also have to look at it this way: Dealers give you a warranty when you buy a vehicle, whether it is 36,000 mile/36 month or more or less, well they only give you a warranty for so long because they know that eventually it will break down. Parts only last so long, especially moving parts. Most engine are not expected to last more than 150,000 miles. So I would eventually replace the timing chain. Most vehicles say to change them at 60,000 miles as routine maintenance. Hope this helps.

2005 camry front control arm bushings

I've been working at a Toyota dealership for a long time and I have never seen lower control arm bushings wear out at 50k..or 100k for that matter, unless the car had been in a major accident. If they were bad you would have heard a lot of clunking noises driving over bumps and turning.
I think you should find another dealer and get a second opinion.
