I have a 2004 Ford F250 Superduty V8 Turbo Deisel. I attempted to put it into 4WD (due to snow) and nothing happened and no indicator light came on. I followed what I usually do by turning the control knob from 2WD to 4WD High while the truck is in motion and I saw no light come on and it didnt even feel that the 4WD was engaged. I'm assuming that a burnt light bulb would have nothing to do with the 4WD not engaging correct? What could be the problem?

    todytwo,

I just hooked up the OBDII scanner and it detected to DTC codes in the truck. I guess my next step is to take it in but at 80k miles should there be a problem with the 4WD and what are typical problems if there is?

Sorry I meant to type it detected no DTC codes. Thanks

Hello nasenterpris
You would notice somthing if the transfer case engaged, even if the hubs did not. The first thing I'd do, before crawling in the snow is to stop by my mechanics or an autozone and have the OBDII
scanner hooked up to see if any DTC codes poped. A 4wd related code may not set the mil light
on the dash. There is a 4wd ctrl. module and a few switchs+solnoids located under the truck under
the hood and under the dash that are 4wd related and if there is a trouble code it can narrow the
search greatly. In the meantime you can check these fuses that are either directly or in directly
related to the 4wd #45 #19 #27 #111 Hope this helps.

    Hi again nasenterpris
Lets start at the shift on the fly solenoid, on the right inner fender near the battery make sure
the connections are clean tight, check the lt blue/pink for pwr to the solenoid also check all
the transfer case connections it's common for wires to get knocked off in the snow just when
you don't need them. I'm gonna guess you have the basic OBDII scanner like mine at home
many of these scanners won't read codes for ABS or transmission and 4wd. I pulled up the wiring diagram for your truck and it seems all things 4wd run through the 4wd control module.
The most you'll be able to do without the proper test eqipment is check for bad connections
and test for pwr in power out at each switch and relay. If you can't find any obvious problems
I would take it to someone that can diagnose it standing up where it's warm.

    Good luck
    todytwo

You need to check for a bad fuse or relay. Also there may be a speed sensor problem in the transfer case. Perform an OBDII scan before doing any repairs. this stuff is complicated and expensive. Let the ODBII scan be your guide to avoid buying parts you don't need. The 4WD drive train and axels, should have been serviced at 80,000 miles. (2004 ?)

4wd problem

Did you make sure the transfer case is engaging? Have someone put it in 4wd and look at the front drive shaft see if its turning. If so that means the vaccum switch is either not engaging the lever on the axle hub. Make sure the lever on the axle punkin or gear hub is not sticking. Also check the linkage under the truck.

I have a 2001 F250 Superduty 7.3l Diesel. When I

I had a problem with vacuum in my F250 diesel. It had a new vacuum pump but would kick out of cruise control every time the vacuum pressure dropped. It turned out to be the vacuum reserve cannister had holes in it.

Seems you reach a tipping point and then all the vacuum systems mess up. You might want to check the reserve cannister and any vacuum servo your 4x4 might have. You can check most of the vacuum stuff with the engine OFF using a vacuum pump. You could have a leaking vacuum pot operating the ductwork. Check your diesel vacuum pump for output and loose belts.

2004 f250 won't shift into 4wd low range.

I'm pretty sure the truck has to be at a complete stop with the transmission in neutral before it will accept your low range input selection. Unlike 4wd high.
