Cummins marine engine QSB5.9 derate under load. Come up with fault code 559 ( fuel pump delivery pressure low ). Where do i start to look. Can it be the fuel pump.

spn 1569 relates engine protection torque derate -condition exists.
critical fault codes related to engine operation are active
code 1 means urgent attention
A sort of limp mode setting that requires immediate attention by a cummins service center to prevent further damage to the engine
go google and type in--- cummins engines fault codes (or cummins engine fault code 1569) and there are pages of pdf downloads that list all the codes and what they stand for
P1260 is pre supply pressure monitoring, rate reduction due to low-pre-supply pressure. That is, fuel related. However, this normally triggers limp mode (<30mph/<2000RPM). Not uncommon on the X5. I would start with replacing fuel filter before delving into the lift pump/fuel delivery unit, in tank pump etc. Clear fault codes, run the car again then see what happens again - same fault codes?...then its delivery fuel pressure related. Should be 3.9bar at idle and not drop below 3.5bar.
Fuel pump relay is in cavity A in the rear SAM ( Signal Acquisition Module.) on the left hand side of the trunk behind a door.
When did you check the voltage..... you must read it while cranking or you will get a zero voltage reading.. The low pressure tank pump builds pressure to the high pressure pump and then shuts down until a pressure drop is sensed in the low pressure line and it then starts up again.
If rail pressure is too low, it often is the high pressure pump in the engine or the relief valve in the fuel rail. The tank pump is low pressure just to stop the tandem pump from cavitating by sucking too hard.
Mercedes can check the rail pressure and do an injector pressure drop to rule out a leaking injector.
If the tank pump is bad it will require replacement.
P0216 DTC - Injection Timing Control Circuit Malfunction and this means the diesel fuel injection pump has a timing failure. This could be that the injection pump timing needs adjusted OR the failure is internal to the injection pump and therefore non-adjustable.
NOTE: If your vehicle is a Dodge Ram with Cummins engine then be aware that fuel delivery problems frequently cause this code. Prolonged fuel delivery problems can cause injection pump failure!
Symptoms of a P0216 DTC may include: Low power Crank, but no start Hard start Displays an intermittent stumble or miss Engine may start and then stall Engine may appear to drive fine but surge at idle
The most frequent cause of this code is a bad injection pump due to poor fuel delivery. Fuel delivery problems could be: A plugged diesel fuel filter An in-tank blockage Air in the fuel due to a cracked in-tank fuel ine above the fuel level Bad transfer (lift) pump Injection pump out of time
Possible Solutions: First, simply check if your injection pump timing is adjustable. If so, check the timing and adjust if necessary.
If you think that you may have a fuel delivery problem, then check the lift pump operation. On Dodge Ram with the Cummins engine, the lift pump should produce about 45 oz of diesel in 25 seconds of operation. This can be performed by disconnecting the fuel hose from the injection pump and pumping the fuel into an approved container. Bump the engine over but do not start it. Then the lift pump will operate for 25 seconds. If the fuel is aerated, then check/repair fuel line and recheck.
With the fuel hose connected the fuel pressure should be 10psi. If the fuel delivery tests fail, replace the diesel fuel filter and recheck.
If it still fails then verify there are no restrictions in the fuel tank
Then replace the lift (transfer) pump. IT SHOULD BE NOTED that if this code surfaced after a routine fuel filter replacement or if you have any of the above symptoms after routine fuel filter replacement, then suspect the fuel transfer pump. This occurs because even a weak transfer pump can still provide enough fuel for the engine to run. But when the fuel system\'s prime is lost due to fuel filter replacement, it may not restart again without fixing the fuel delivery problem.
If you found your injection pump to be bad, the lift pump should be checked for operation to protect the new injection pump. This is because weak or low output from lift pump are common cause of injection pump failure. There are some aftermarket kits that can be purchased to warn the operator when the fuel pressure/volume drops to level that could damage the injection pump.

The ECM uses the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor as an indication of engine load. High voltage would indicate low engine vacuum and higher engine load. Low voltage would indicate high engine vacuum and lower engine load. The ECM uses the information from this sensor to help calculate fuel delivery and spark timing.
could be a fault with the fuel pump. it may be wearing out. check the fuel pressure at delivery. a blocked filter can also do this as its being surged for more fuel not the normal filter this one is on the pump it has larger holes and if you have sludge in the tank this can stop the fuel delivery. . for vacuum leaks spray some carb cleaner around the air lines any change in the engine usually indicates an air leak. also the fuel pressure valve these can all lower or stop fuel pressure.
HI. There are some areas that will need to be checked for faults, in this case. Check the following:
1. Fuel filter- If this device is clogged, or faulty, it will decrease the flow of fuel to the injector assembly. If the filter hasn't been changed recently, this will be a good place to start.
2. Fuel pump- This device may be weak, or grounded poorly. check the ground, and all wires the link the pump to the power source. replace any corroded contacts and connectors. wires,as well, if needed.
3. Fuel pressure regulator- The fuel pressure regulator is used to keep the fuel pressure in the fuel rail consistent and change the fuel pressure depending on the throttle position. The fuel rail is in a fuel loop between the fuel pump feed and return lines. Because the fuel delivery requirements change depending on the engine's throttle position and engine loads, the fuel injection system must be able to adapt to meet the fuel requirements of the engine's operating conditions during idle, acceleration and steady cruising. The fuel pressure regulator has a small vacuum line attached to it that allows the pressure regulator to change the fuel pressure in the fuel loop depending upon the intake manifold pressure which changes as the throttle position changes. When the throttle is opened, the manifold vacuum pressure drops off, causing the pressure regulator to increase the fuel pressure in the fuel loop, which increases the amount of fuel delivery at the injectors to provide for the additional fuel needed for the engine to operate properly. At idle, the manifold vacuum increases and the demands for the rate of fuel delivery are decreased so the pressure regulator decreases the fuel pressure in the fuel loop.
1. Look for visible evidence of fuel leaks. 2. A pressure regulator can become defective due to foreign material or a ruined diaphragm.
The result will be hard starting, poor idle quality, and lack or power. Burned spark plugs can result from operating with a lean air/fuel mixture, as well. replace this device if faults exist.
P1664 FIP (Fuel Injection Pump) malfunction (possible air ingress in low pressure fuel side)
Most likey the Diesel fuel injection pump needs to be replaced or overhauled.
