This is going to sound a daft question but how do I turn off the air con. I ave climate control and there is no seperate button to turn of the air con. There is an 'econ' button but the manual says this just relates heating up slower in the winter.

The econ button allows you to set the heating manually, With this button pressed only manual heating is on and aircon is off.if you want heating and aircon off press the OFFbutton

Yes it needs to be coded and adapted for that car so it works with equipment installed . Depending on year it may need to be released from component protection mode, thats an anti theft mode.
The only other thing then would be if the compressor is turning, engaging, and the cooling fan working properly. You should either be able to see the compressor clutch engage, as the switch is energized, or at least hear it click loudly when the switch is energized. If it is not, then there are sensors for the low pressure/high pressure line to tell the compressor when to function, that also have to be checked.
As the engine runs with the compressor turning, one line should be hot/warm, the othe,r (larger diameter hose) should be cool/cold, if the system is working properly.
If the compressor is turning when you have the A/C turned on, then see if the cooling fan is running as well. It must run to remove the heat and cause the process to function properly.
you must 1st remove the trim , then the radio must come out , the ashtray and finally you can remove the AC control head look closely for the tabs to press that release the unit.
