Volt meter on dash is not working properly. Ignition off, hand points to about "3:00"; ignition on and running, hand moves clock-wise toward "6:00" and hits bottom of gauge. Vehicle is putting out just over 14 volts (checked with a meter) Can this be fixed easily (and cheaply)?

SOURCE: Flickering lights. The interior and exterior

I would check and clean the wires going to your alternator first, to be sure, but you probably have a bad diode inside the alternator. Depending on where you live you may be able to get it checked out at a place like Autozone but it will have to be checked when it is acting up or it may check okay. If there is an auto electric repair shop in your area you can get them to check and repair it. Repairs should be about $50 to $60 if its the diodes. Hope this helps.

How to time engine without a timing light

Assuming points, coil, distributor.

Remove spark plugs. Turn crank by hand with long socket wrench at balancer until near TDC compression stroke of cylinder 1. Now turn crank forward/backward unil timing mark aligns to the degree mark you want (advance or retard).

Connect a volt meter to the points side of the ignition coil and ground (engine block). Turn ignition switch to RUN position, do not start. If meter is near zero volts then points are closed. Likewise if meter is near battery voltage then points are open.

Slowly rotate distributor a few degrees either direction until points just open. Verify the distributor rotor is aligned with the cylinder 1 position of the distributor cap (plug wire 1). If the cap and rotor are not in proper alignment, make necessary corrections.

Hi Lisa , how much do you know about automotive electrical systems ? Using wiring diagrams to locate testing points in an electrical circuit ,then using a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter to take voltage readings ? Your vehicle has a safety feature called shift interlock , this will not allow you to move shifter out of park unless your foot is pushing the brake pedal . Same for ignition lock ,can't take the key out. Electicaly controlled solenoids. If the vehicle looses power this thing's will not work.

Locate the ignition relay in fuse box of 1993 Ford E350 Van

There isn't a relay for this year. I doubt the ignition switch is OK. I would first pull all the fuse and relays you can find(look and see if good). Then check fusible links(volt/ohm meter). Then start checking plugs. Check power and ground points(volt/ohm meter). Just a note.. I worked on the 60's to present cars.

My 1989 4cyl starts but then immediately stops. Checked spark to plugs and noticed I have spark so long as ignition switch kept in "start" position (and the engine actually runs on its own) but...

Hi, I don't see anything in the wiring diagram to cause this behavior except the ignition switch itself. I recommend you check for power to the coil in both the start and run positions of the switch. You can use a 12 volt test light for that purpose. Hook the test light clip to engine ground and touch the probe to the yellow wire on the coil. If you do have power in both positions of the switch, the problem may be with an anti-theft system that is not showing on the wiring diagram. If you had an anti-theft system that was acting up, there would probably be a light blinking on the dash. Please let me know if you have questions and thanks for using FixYa.

Looking to find the correct specs to adjust a TPS for a 1994 Mazda 929. Using a multi-purpose voltmeter.

YOU NEED 2 VOLT METERS.FIRST OF ALL START ENGINE.LET IT GET OPERATING TEMPERATURE THEN TURN OFF ENGINE.THEN YOU CONNECT TWO VOLT METERS TO THE TEST CONNECTOR.TURN IGNITION ON AND CHECK THAT CURRENT FLOWS TO ONLY ONE VOLT METER.IF BOTH VOLT METERS SHOW CURRENT FLOW REMOVE THE CAP AND TURN THE ADJUSTING SCREW COUNTERCLOCKWISE UNTIL ONE VOLT METER SHOWS CURRENT.IF NO CURRENT IS REGISTERED BY EITHER VOLTMETER TURN THE ADJUSTING SCREW CLOCK WISE UNTIL ONLY ONE VOLT METER SHOWS CURRENT.INSTALL THE CAP ON THE ADJUSTING SCREW AND DISCONNECT THE THROTTLE SENSOR CONNECTOR.CONNECT AN OHM METER TO THE THROTTLE SENSOR TERMINALS.OPEN THE THROTTLE VALVE AND CHECK THE RESISTANCE READING FROM THE THROTTLE SENSOR.AT IDLE THE THROTTLE SENSOR SHOULD SHOW ABOUT ONE KILO OHM RESISTANCE.AT WIDE OPEN THROTTLE THE SENSOR SHOULD SHOW ABOUT 5 KILO OHMS RESISTANCE.ANY RESULTS OTHER THAN THESE.REPLACE THE THROTTLE SENSOR AND RETEST.

hi sounds like a bad connection behind the clocks has any one done any work near the dash before the problem started as the wiring loom connecters can come loose a bit like a scrat lead on your tv you could try tapping the gauges gently when they start acting up see if it makes any difference or put your hand behind the dash and jiggle the the loom gently see if any thing happens if this fails i would take the clocks out and check the wiring yates210456
