2001 Toyota camry 2.2 L 4 cyl engine timming belt replacement

Looking for information on whether the 2.2 L 4 cyl camry engine is an interference engine or not. Recomendations are to replace timming belt at 90,000 to 100,000 miles. If not interference i would wait a bit instead of doing the preventative maintenance of replacing it

The 2001 Camry 2.2 has a timing belt.
Recommended change interval is 90,000 miles.
There is no good reason for putting the replacement off, as the belt may be stretched slightly when it nears the rec replace interval, and your mileage may suffer because the engine is not in proper "time".
If the belt jumps time or breaks, it will NOT damage the valves.

The info I have seen is about 100,000 mi for this car
.
But it is really dependent on the wear on the belts is in certain different climates.
The belts can break at any time. 100,000 is just a rough estimate.

Some engines will be damaged if the belt is broken, like Hondas, others will not, like my old Pinto.
So it's a gamble, we all have to guess and hope it's accurate.

So I would say "ask your Honda dealer."

Hope this helps.

1995 toyota camry If timing belt broke while I was driving what damage was caused?

Whether 4-cyl or V6 there should not have been any, as these are non-interference engines, that is, the pistons do not hit the valves when timing fails. The engine just stops.

Does 98 toyota camry have timing belt or chain? When do I know if it needs to be replaced? Has 140000 miles on it. Have been told if belt snaps, it can destroy engine.

Both the 4 and 6 cyl. engines in this car have belts. The 4's don't last as long because they lack a tensioner and get noisy. Toyotas for the most part do not get hurt when the belt breaks. non interference engines...nice huh?

This reply is probably too late to help,
but no, it is NOT an interference engine.
I've had my timing belt break twice in the course of 253,000 miles
with no damage to the valves and pistons.
