Check if u have a heater full blast if u get a hot air comes out to it.....if not then water is not properly circulated it doesnt cool the engine if thats ok then check the pump and thermostat and try ti feel the return line of the coolant to the radiator if its gets hot or warm to touch (located on top part of the radiator) means if its just warm water is not circulatibg properly I dont have experience on 75 rover im just telling u how the coolant cools the engine or how does the system flows and its applicable to all cars that has water cooled engine there one exception the air cooled volkswagen hope this might help u out have patient.....lastly did u flush the system after u installed the head gasket? U have something drop in tge engine while changing the head gasket and its causing blockage just a reminder
No idea here this is not a car question and iam not a plumber but i did have a emersion heater years ago and the cold feed from a header tank in the loft went into the heater and their was two feeds one from the tank and one direct from the mains with a special non return valve in the main line feed --why it didnt just fill from the header tank i have no idea but from that i would say the feed for your heater would be much the same with a header tank in case the inlet supply froze up ? Sorry iam a car mechanic so i have no idea but the return inlet pipe would be my logical choice
You have still got air in the system.Remove the Feed back pipe from the header tank and wait for all the air to come out while the engine is running making sure you are toping up the header tank at the same time Dont allow header tank to run dry while doing this.Good luck
yes you got it in one,, its an air lock stoping the water going round the heater, you need to blead the air out rad seal wont block up the heater,,,,iv used it many times,,,my old truck ran with it in for years!
look for a bleed scew on a water pipe and open it with the motor running let water ran out till no air is in it, top up header tank as well
if you drained all the water out the engine you may need to bleed the air out of the heater to get it to work right,
look for a plastic bleed velve on a rubber hose it will be high up above the rad or header tank fill rad with water open bleed velve and let water out till no air is in it, top up water in rad,,, do this with a cold engine,,
Sometimes this bleed method is not enough.
Bleed air out of the very top water hoses on the engine (when cold!) whilst filling. Then run the engine for a short time, check tank level again and if required refill when cool enough to be safe, repeat this if water level drops in tank again. When water level in header tank stays constant run the car up to full temp. and see if problem is fixed. Then check level again when cool.
There is a leaking coolant hose, or a perforation of the Heater Matrix.Often a temporary quick fix is to shut off the incoming Hot Coolant and crimp the return to engine hose with a Long Nose snap lock.

you need to replace the heater core and pressure text the radiator cap, replace if it leaks down go to a parts store to do this also you need to replace freeze plugs if you don't they will blow and ruin the engine,a slo check that the water pump is not bad, loosen the pump belt and see if you can wiggle the water pump with fan connected, if you have any play replace the water pump. and add new anti freeze.
Pressure test the system, it sounds like head gaskets that is backing into the water jackets and not the oil ports, which is the best of the two. Have heads checked for cracks of warping.
Usually the sign of low water level in the radiator. The first thing to be starved of hot water when level is low is the heater. When you rev engine up this speed up quantity of flow and so some gets around the heater. Check level in radiator as well as header tank. Top up with the correct coolant. Cheers John
