Hi ok under the car right hand side just under the rear seats there is a plastic cradle which is next to the fuel tank there are 2 or 3 plastic bolts holding the cradel in place remove these and the cradel will come down far enough to work on it in this cradle there will be the fuel pump and just in front of that is the fuel filter there will be an inlet and outlet pipe which each end will have a nut on them conecting the fuel filter not sure of spanner size but put one on the filter and the other on the pipe nut only a few turns at first as the fuel lines are preasurised and will squirt fuel about its only about a half pint when the fuels stopped losen the nuts on both end of the filter i think it only goes on one way fuel in fuel out so to speak fuel in will connect to the pump fuel out goes to the engine they are easy to spot the difference fit new filter dont over tighten the nuts that it put cradel back on prime the ignition a couple of times by on and off the ignition then start the car there is no bleeding the fuel system or anything like that its realy simple hope this helps cheers ivan

Mercedes c180 fuel gauge giving mix reading

You can try to clean the ground behind the instrument cluster to see if that helps but most likely the sending unit has gone bad in the gas tank.

The speed'o meter is showing a "tool" sign

the "tool " is refering to service work. Could be fuel related but not really the fuel filter. do you have plenty of miles between services. otherwise may be showing you that your service is due. and mileage will suffer. I am assuming you have no loss of power? No power loss no fuel filter problem. check when the next service should be done and check your air filter. another big thing that trips sensors and leads to poor mileage.
