First make sure your air cleaner is good and clean. Black smoke indicates lack of air and uncomplete burning of the fuel mixture. I don't like to recommend oil but you should be able to see what the manufature recomends in your manual.
any 15w/40 diesel oil is as good as another in todays world, toyota oil is one of the major oil companies anyway,if you stick to caltex esso shell ,bp any of the major oil producers you cant go wrong ,,even pensoil valvolene no worries Diesel engines require more frequent oil changes due to the carbon that escapes around the piston and rings while operating.

Engine concern

Smoke (blue or black) or steam (white)? White smoke is really steam that is caused by water leaking onto hot surface. Could be leaking from hose running to heater coil under dash, or something else. Check radiator water level to make sure water level is ok. Blue smoke is oil burning. This could be dangerous, caused by similar scenario of oil leaking on a hot surface (from a gasket leak, etc), or exhaust fumes. Black smoke means something is actually burning and could indicate fire. Black or blue some could fill vehicle cabin with toxic fumes, even if you don't smell anything bad.

Smoke engines

Smokes can be of three colors.
1. White smoke.
Excessive white smoke reveals presence of water in fuel, thermostat valve stuck open, or burnt cylinder head gasket.
2. Black smoke.
Black smoke could be observed due to the unburnt fuel or higher percentage of Hydrocarbons during the combustion process, defective regulating valve, ruptured PCV valve, low fuel pump pressure, defective charcoal canister, ruptured or leaking fuel injectors.
3. Blue smoke.
Blue smoke reveals the engine failure.

Toyota Caldina 1999, too smoke from exhaust

if it is diesel and you have black smoke you need fuel injectors either serviced or replaced also you must check the engine valves clearance. If your smoke is blue white smelling unburned fuel renew injectors. If it is blue white smelling oil and diesel then you will have piston rings and valve steam seals.

Black smoke on hills

Great engines/trucks!! This is a sign of fouling internally. Try some diesel injector cleaner with a few tanks of fuel and it will probably clear right up. If there are no performance issues, this shouldn't be anything major at all. Look up BG and have some shipped. This is probably some of the best stuff. If this can not be found, any good name brand will work. Just make sure it IS for diesels. Let me know if you need anything else.

Jag X TYPE Diesel Black smoke coming from exhaust on acceleration

i had this problem and thought the fuel filter oil filter needed replacing so i have just had a service done but problem is still there but not as bad. been told it could be the AGR valve or a split pipe going to it which recuirculates unused fuel back to burn again. therefore unspent fuel is coming out of the exhaust causing the black smoke. i am still looking for the answer aswell, hope this helps.
