First, remove the exhaust pipe all the way to the turbo, so you can see the turbine wheel. This should look clean, with no carbon build up, scale or oil along the surface, and the blades should be free from cracks, wear and damage.
If the turbine in the turbo wobbles etc, you know it's damaged.
If your car runs at all that means your turbo is working to some degree, as otherwise the car wouldn't start at all.
check the turbo hose at ack of engine i had same prob with mondeo ,thought worst but tool it to garage and there was pressure burts which knocked the hose off £10 and fixed
ive had the same problem with my ford focus 1.8 tdci wont start at all towed it to fords who says its the fuel pump and its ganna cost 600- 1,000 pounds hope this helps.
yes ive taken it off and taken it apart now i need to rebuilde it
